Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic
With all the talk about the upcoming release of The Titanic 3D it got us thinking about the various roles that leading man, Leonardo DiCaprio, has taken on over the years.
Here are a few of the many changing faces of Leo that have graced our screens...
- Titanic (1997) - Jack Dawson
In a role that arguably kick started his career, Titanic saw DiCaprio take on the part of leading man Jack Dawson in this epic film based on the true story of the ill-fated maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic.
The movie was a billion dollar success and was, until Avatar came along, the biggest grossing movie of all time.
The movie turned DiCaprio into a teen heart-throb and his on-screen romance with Kate Winslet remains one of the best in cinema history.
- Blood Diamond (2006) - Danny Archer
A darker role sees DiCaprio star as Danny Archer, a mercenary smuggler searching for a priceless diamond amid the chaos of Sierra Leone's civil war.
Forced to confront the brutal reality of the diamond trade, Archer changes his search for financial reward to a quest for redemption.
Along with Gangs of New York this gritty drama marked DiCaprio's departure from being a teen-idol to more gritty roles.
- Body of Lies (2008) - Roger Ferris
DiCaprio stars in this post-9/11 espionage thriller as idealistic CIA agent Roger Ferris who has been stationed in Jordan after being wounded in Iraq.
Ferris dedicates himself to stopping further attacks by Al Qaeda, but as the stakes rise he finds himself at the centre of things and the plot he starts spirals into an outcome he could never have foreseen.
- The Departed (2009) - Billy Costigan
The Departed remains one of DiCaprio's finest performances as he reunited with filmmaker Martin Scorsese, in what has become a really great partnership.
Two men from opposite sides of the law are undercover within the Massachusetts State Police and the Irish mafia, but violence and bloodshed boil when discoveries are made, and the moles are dispatched to find out their enemy's identities.
It was a powerful central turn from DiCaprio as a man who is forced to hide behind a mask and be something and someone that he isn't.
The Departed went on to win the Best Picture and Best Director Oscar.
- Inception (2010) - Dominic Cobb
Inception saw DiCaprio take on the part of Dominic Cobb in this mind-bending sci-fi action film. Set 'within the architecture of the mind,' the film follows skilled thief, Cobb, as he is given a chance at redemption with his toughest job to date.
Inception was one of the biggest movies of 2010, both at the box office and with the critics.
- J Edgar (2011) - J Edgar
DiCaprio plays the lead title role in this highly anticipated biopic that explores the public and private life of one of the most powerful and controversial figures of the 20th century.
As the face of American law enforcement for almost fifty years, J Edgar Hoover was feared and admired, but behind closed doors he held secrets that threatened to destroy his image, his career and his life.
