It seems that Hollywood can’t get enough of Greek mythology in movies of late and this weeks sees this theme return once again in Immortals.
The movie sees Tarsem Singh in the director’s chair as he brings together a cast that includes Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, Freida Pinto and Luke Evans.
So to celebrate the release of the movie we take a look at some of the actors who have played the mighty Zeus over the years.
- Luke Evans - Immortals
Luke Evans take on the role of Zeus this week in Singh’s epic Immortals in what has been a great year for the actor.
Eons after the Gods won their mythic struggle against the Titans, a new evil threatens the land. Mad with power, King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) has declared war against humanity.
Theseus is a mortal man chosen by Zeus to lead the fight against the ruthless King Hyperion, who is on a rampage across Greece to obtain a weapon that can destroy them all.
- Niall McGinnis - Jason and the Argonauts
Jason and the Argonauts remains on of the best fantasy/ Greek mythology movies that has ever graced the big screen.
Niall McGinnis took on the role of Zeus in the 1963 movie, that saw Todd Armstrong take on the role of Jason.
The legendary Greek hero leads a team of intrepid adventurers in a perilous quest for the legendary Golden Fleece.
To this day the movie is remembered for the stop motion work of Ray Harryhausen as the skeleton fight remains on of the best scenes in the film.
- Liam Neeson - Clash of the Titans
Liam Neeson took over the role of Zeus when Clash of the Titans was remade by director Louis Leterrier last year.
Neeson was an unhappy Zeus who wanted to teach human kind a lesson - so he let loose on them his brother Hades, god of the underworld.
But Hades meets him match when Zeus' mortal son Perseus sets off on a quest to keep evil at bay.
Neeson is set to reprise the role of Zeus in the new year in Clash of the Titans 2.
- Sean Bean - Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is loosely based on the novels by Rick Riordan and hit the big screen last year.
Sean Bean take over the role of Zeus and he blames Percy, the demigod son of Poseidon, for the theft of his bolt.
Percy sets out on an out on an adventure to settle an on-going battle between the gods and prove he was not the thief.
The movie was a fun look at Greek mythology and a second movie is believed to be in the pipeline for next year.
- Laurence Olivier - Clash of the Titans
The 1981 Clash of the Titans movie remains a personal favourite of movie of movies in this genre as an all star cast brought this story to the big screen.
The acting legend took on the role of Zeus in the movie alongside Mark Hamlin, Maggie Smith and Ursula Andress.
Perseus, son of Zeus, sets out on a quest to battle both Medusa and the Kraken monster to save the Princess Andromeda.
Immortals is released 11th November
