Anna Wells (Charlotte Rampling) is a lonely divorcee who is encouraged by her daughter to attend singles nights, events which get her out of her cramped apartment and provide her with the opportunity to meet men.
Following one such evening, she bumps into DCI Bernie Reid (Gabriel Byrne), a jaded police detective who is on his way to a crime scene.
Reid is immediately enamoured with the enigmatic woman, tracking her down and spying on her. His burgeoning obsession leads him to neglect his work and make some questionable decisions.
