The new Spider-Man was 'revealed' late last night to an incredible amount of buzz and well, I'm just not sure what we've got here. Obviously, all superhero films have to be dark and brooding now. So, we've clearly managed to fill the quota here, it's completely dark and he's covered in oil. Whereas the last suit was made of cloth, this time around it seems to be made of rubber. He's going to get so sweaty when he wears that underneath his clothes. Upon closer inspection though, it may be made out of that material you get in tracksuits, you know the breathable rubbish underneath your armpits that you get, that somehow makes you sweat more than it should. Well, that. Who really knows? Is it rubber? Is it tracksuit armpit? Another key difference is that if you look closely on the higher resolution images, you can notice mechanical web-shooters in his arms. The original films had Tobey Maguire shooting webs directly from his arms but this has the more traditional mechanical web-shooters. The original suit and the whole feel of the films was a mainly high-concept and quite brightly coloured. This image shows that they're trying to move away from this and create their own feel, with less fuss and without straying too far from the original material. Even the decision to use Gwen Stacy, a lesser known character overall but who is his first girlfriend in the comics, was a strange decision. The usual character associated with the Spider-Man universe is Mary-Jane Watson, played by Kirsten Dunst in the first three films.
It's widely regarded that Sam Raimi did a brilliant job with the first two Spider-Man films, after a convoluted third film, a reboot looked set to happen. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are now the ones in the main roles and both of them are two of the biggest rising stars of the moment. Garfield shone in The Social Network so there's no reason for him to be anything other than brilliant in this new Spider-Man incarnation.
It's hard to say really how this new suit looks, it's darker and that's all you can properly draw from it, we'll have to wait to see it in action, moving and with a mask on as well, until we can really make a proper judgement, but so far, it hasn't overly impressed me personally. It's a bit more blue than the usual Spider-Man suit isn't it?
An issue that can be drawn from casting is, does Garfield really look all that geeky? Peter Parker is meant to be the stereotypical geeky teenager and Maguire summed that image up, but isn't Garfield a little bit more than your average geek.?
You can compare and contrast those images yourself if you want, right here. The main image is Andrew Garfield and then Tobey Maguire is in the text. Which do you prefer? Are you excited for the new reboot? Let us know below.
