Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson

The unknown Robert Pattinson shot to fame at the end of last year when he took on the role of Edward Cullen in the adaptation of Stephenie Meyers' novel Twilight.

The film saw Edward fall in love with a human girl Bella and made Pattinson an international star and an immediate pin-up.

And he is all poised to set heart racing once again as he returns to the role of Edward next week for the latest instalment of the Twilight Saga; New Moon.

Following Bella Swan's ill-fated 18th birthday party, Edward Cullen and his family abandon the town of Forks, Washington, in an effort to protect her from the dangers inherent in their world.

As the heartbroken Bella sleepwalks through her senior year of high school, numb and alone, she discovers Edward's image comes to her whenever she puts herself in jeopardy. Her desire to be with him at any cost leads her to take greater and greater risks.

With the help of her childhood friend Jacob Black, Bella refurbishes an old motorbike to carry her on her adventures. Bella's frozen heart is gradually thawed by her budding relationship with Jacob, a member of the mysterious Quileute tribe, who has a supernatural secret of his own.

And while Pattinson is the currently perceived as the hottest actor to take on the part of a vampire we take a look at some of the other stars who have taken on a similar role.

David Boreanaz burst onto out television screens as Angel, a vampire with a soul, in hit television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a love interest for Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy throughout the first three seasons.

But he left Buffy to go and amend for his sins appearing again in his own spin off series Angel. The series saw him work as a private detective through the first four seasons while taking on evil demons.

1994’s Interview With a Vampire had a whole host of rather delicious actors taking on the roles of blood sucking vampires.

The movie was an adaptation of Anne Rice's novel and the film cemented Brad Pitt as an actor to keep an eye on, as well as all the girls falling in love with him all over again.

Hottie Antonio Banderas was also in the move and took on the role of Armand, who lives in Paris.
With a great cast and Neil Jordan behind the camera the movie was a box office hit, and for any Tom Cruise fans he was in there too.

Kiefer Sutherland and Jason Patric joined forces in 1987’s The Lost Boys. Patric starred as Michael Emmerson, who had moved to California with his brother Sam.

At first, Sam laughs off rumours he hears about vampires who inhabit the small town. But after Mike meets a beautiful girl at the local amusement park, he begins to exhibit the classic signs of vampirism.

Fearing for his own safety, Sam recruits two young vampire hunters to save his brother by finding and destroying the head vampire. And the head vampire came in the form of Sutherland who had tricked Michael into drinking vampire blood.

Other actors such as Wesley Snipes and Gary Oldman have all taken on similar movies, which enjoyed great success, and with the likes of new hit TV show True Blood, with Stephen Moyer setting hearts a flutter, the vampire genre is something that continues to attract major interest.

New Moon is released 20th November.
