Eritrea, 1981: there is upheaval in the country as forces fight a war of independence against Ethiopia. Ten-year-old Awet (Letekidan Micael) is a wilful young girl instilled with a keen sense of justice by the Italian nuns who run the Catholic orphanage where she lives.

Unexpectedly, her father appears to claim her, and then passes her into the clutches of the Eritrean Liberation Front, known as the Jebha.

Though she is too small to carry a gun, she is given hard labour tasks that are a struggle for her at her young age. Yet Awet finds a role model in rebel leader Ma'aza (Seble Tilahun), is drawn to the woman's striking appearance and revolutionary rhetoric, and soon starts to sing the rebel songs used to rally the other reluctant soldiers. - London Film Festival
