Grassroots

Intandem Films is proud to announce the UK release of Grassroots, the first film from its newly formed UK distribution arm.

Stephen Gyllenhaal’s Grassroots is the heart warming and inspiring story of a political underdog and will be released in cinemas across the UK on 9th November 2012, having premiered at the 56th BFI London Film Festival.

Based on the true story of the 2001 Seattle City Council election, Phil Campbell, played by Jason Biggs (American Pie), is an out of work journalist persuaded into managing the political campaign of his oddball friend, Grant Cogswell, played by Joel David Moore (Savages, Avatar).

A disillusioned, somewhat loose cannon and political unknown with no experience, Grant attempts to take on the long term incumbent for a seat on the Seattle City Council.

Cogswell is many things except the ideal candidate for the job. He’s a loud mouth activist, just smart enough, just arrogant enough, just idealistic enough - and just unemployed enough - to think he can change the world!

With his infectious enthusiasm and a clear vision: to inspire Seattle’s downtrodden activists, idealists and hipsters to stand up for what they believe in, to take back their city government, to build a beautiful monorail that would carry them into the future, being part of something bigger than themselves.

Through Campbell’s help, Cogswell starts to begin achieving the unthinkable; rallying an unlikely posse of misfits, students, and square pegs to his once seemingly hopeless David-and-Goliath battle against a firmly entrenched incumbent, to the very brink of victory. Can they manage to achieve the impossible against all odds?

Directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal (Homegrown, Girl Fight) Grassroots also stars Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under), Cobie Smulders (Marvel’s Avengers Assemble) and Cedric the Entertainer (Madagascar, Intolerable Cruelty) as Robert McIver, the veteran politico, long standing councillor and rival to Cogswell’s campaign. The film is an adaption of Phil Campbell’s memoir 'Zioncheck for President.'
