With performances is Dial M for Murder and The Country Girl, for which she won an Oscar, Grace Kelly became one of cinema's biggest stars and still remains a big screen icon.
But away from the cinema screen Kelly's personal life was the subject of tabloid gossip and speculation with rumours of affairs circulating before and after she got married.
In 1955 the actress met Prince Rainier III after being invited to take part in a photoshoot at the Palace of Monaco while she was at the Cannes Film Festival.
She stayed in touch with the Prince on her return to America and, after meeting her family, the prince proposed and she accepted.
On Aril 18, 1956 Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III in a civil ceremony in the Palace Room of Monaco and 30 million people tuned in to watch the wedding.
Princess Grace gave birth to the couple's first child just nine months later, a little girl called Caroline, and a son, Albert, just over a year later. She had one more child, Stephanie, in 1965.
But her acting career had come to a halt there was a public outcry when she considered a role on Marnie in 1962 and Prince Rainier stopped her from appearing in The Turning Point in 1977.
Princess Grace was just fifty two when she died of a stroke when she while she was out driving with her daughter Stephanie in Monaco.
The car left the road and fell down the mountainside. Both Grace and Stephanie were pulled out alive from the wreckage but Grace never regained consciousness. Prince Rainier never remarried and was buried beside her when he died in 2005.
But rumours of flings and affairs involving the actress followed her for her entire career and she was branded a home wrecker after an alleged affair with her Dial M for Murder co-star Ray Milland.
The actor was twenty two years her junior and had told the actress that he had left Muriel Milland, his wife of thirty years and mother of their son. However it was never proven that Kelly had a relationship with the actor.
The actress was engaged to marry Russian fashion designer Oleg Cassini and was pregnant with his child. But she was torn between her Catholic upbringing and trying to avoid a scandal she called off the wedding and had an abortion.
Kelly was also linked to Bing Crosby and David Niven.
