Next week Hayao Miyazaki's animation movies return to the big screen in the form of the long awaited Ponyo.
The movie follows the developing friendsship between Ponyo, a goldfish princess, and five year old boy Sosuke.
Frankie Jonas voices the character Sosuke and I caught up with him just before Christmas for a quick chat about the movie.
- You take on the role of Sosuke in your new movie Ponyo can you tell me a little bit about your character?
Sosuke is a little kid who becomes good friends with Noah’s character, Ponyo who plays the little goldfish.
- And what was it like seeing yourself as a cartoon character, was that pretty exciting?
It was very different than anything I’ve done and very exciting!!
- In the movie you get to work with Noah Cyrus so what was she like?
Noah’s great and we were friends before the movie so it was really cool to get to work with her.
- So have you seen any other Studio Ghibli movies? Howl's Moving Castle and My Neighbour Totoro are my favourites.
Yes I’ve seen My Neighbour Totoro and I loved it.
- You worked alongside Cate Blanchett and Liam Neeson on Ponyo that's pretty cool so what was that like?
I got to meet both of them but didn’t see them much because it isn’t like a normal movie. Since you are reading your lines you can really do it whenever so I didn’t see a lot of the characters very much.
- How did you get the part? Did you have to audition?
They asked me to audition. It was my first audition!
- You also work alongside your big brothers in Jonas so what is it like working with them, do you boss them around?
It’s so fun working with my brothers. It’s just another way I get to spend time with them. We play jokes and have a lot of fun on the set all the time.
- You also won a Teen Choice Award this year so how was that?
It was so awesome! I won for Male Breakout Star. I was really surprised that I won.
- How exciting is acting for you? Do you plan an act in the future or do you want to try something else?
I definitely want to keep acting and I also have a band with my friend James so I want to keep doing both things.
- What do your friends think of your success?
It isn’t a big deal to them.
- Finally what's coming up for you?
I’m auditioning for different things but first I’m excited for Christmas!
Ponyo is released 12th February.
