Farrah Fawcett 1947 - 2009

Farrah Fawcett, one of the original Charlie’s Angels and pin up of the seventies, has lost her battle with cancer at the age of sixty two.

An icon of the seventies Texas born Fawcett kicked off her acting career in the late sixties working in television commercials before landing a guest spot on I Dream of Jeannie.

Other acting roles began to steadily role in for the young actress as she went on to appear in the likes of The Dating Game, Harry O and The Six Million Dollar Man, where she met her husband Lee Majors.

But it was her role as Jill Monroe in Charlie’s Angels, which began life as a movie in March 1976, for which she is best remembered.

Alongside Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith the first airing of Charlie’s Angels was a huge hit and the nod was given to turn it into a series for TV.

The show kicked off in September 1976 and ran for five seasons, but with Fawcett only appearing in the first, with the entire cast becoming household names around the world. But Fawcett was a firm favourite amongst the fans and she was a television icon and sex symbol for the decade.

Away from Charlie’s Angels the popular actress found success in the theatre with performances in Extremities and Between Two Women.

She was also juggling television and movie roles as she received an Emmy Award nomination for her performance in The Burning Bed in the role of a battered wife before going to be land a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the big screen adaptation of Extremities.

Throughout her entire career the actress remained a sex symbol and the 1995 issue of Playboy where she posed nude became the best selling issue of the decade.

Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006 but after chemotherapy and surgery she was given the all clear.

But just months later the cancer was back and she has battled against the disease ever since seeking treatment in both American and Germany.

She passed away in the intensive care unit of Saint John’s Health Centre in California at 9.28 am June 25th. She is survived by her partner Ryan O’Neil and Son Redmond.
