Tooth Fairy

Tooth Fairy

Going to the cinema with the fervent imaginations and wide eyed wonder of children is when the ultimate magic of the big screen is released, and it’s even better when the film you are going to see is enjoyable for both kids and grownups alike!

To celebrate the release of Tooth Fairy on Friday, we have compiled our top family films that have the magical effects to amaze children and bring the parents along for the ride too.

The Wizard of Oz - Magic abounds in this all time great that has appealed to generation after generation and sits proudly at the top of our list for its timeless appeal.

The movie remains Judy Garland's most famous film and is just as popular today as it was back in 1939, yes seventy years ago.

Based on the 1900 children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum the film cleverly mixes black and white images with technicolor and starred Judy Garland, one of Hollywood's biggest child stars of the time.

Nanny McPhee - Everyone’s favourite magical nanny taught naughty children a lesson with her magical staff and moral life lessons.

Emma Thompson's creation is a twenty first century Mary Poppins who has delighted cinema go-ers already this when a sequel hit the big screen.

Tooth Fairy - Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson stars as the tooth fairy with a host of magical goodies, and an amazing support cast including funny men Stephen Merchant and Seth McFarlane to entertain the parents too!

Mary Poppins - A spoonful of sugar sweetened our hearts and minds with this family favourite filled with dancing penguins, enchanted merry-go-rounds and parties on the ceiling!

E.T - The heart rending story of the extra terrestrial who found a home from home with Elliott and his family.

I defy anyone to sit through Steven Spielberg's E.T. and not shed a tear. Released in 1982 the film, which starred Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore became the most financially successful movie ever released at that point.

The film followed Elliott who befriends an alien who has become stranded in Earth. Elliott enlists the help of his older brother and younger sister to keep the alien hidden from their mother and the government while trying to return him home.

Back to the Future - The time travel adventure won an Oscar for Best Sound Effects, and the adventures of Doc and Marty McFly in their magical DeLorean were so popular they spawned two sequels!

The Princess Bride - The classic fairy tale had all the magical ingredients; giants, evil princes, beautiful princess and battling rodents of unusual size!

Shrek - The magical fairytale world that was never told, Shrek re-wrote the rule book but had all the family laughing along in delight.

2001 saw the friendly ogre hit the big screen for the very first time kicking off the very successful, if somewhat unexpected franchise.

With a great voice cast of Cameron Diaz, Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy the movie follows Shrek's journey to rescue Princess Fiona in return for getting his peaceful swamp returned to him.

Labyrinth - The tale of 15 year old Sarah who has to rescue her baby brother from the Labyrinth and evil goblin king Jareth (played in brilliant flamboyant style by David Bowie) is still entertaining kids and big kids alike... nearly 25 years after it was made!

Pirates of the Caribbean - This swashbuckling high seas adventure and superb special affects had parents asking their kids to go to the cinema to see it.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is the film that, on paper at least, should not have been a success. Based on a film genre that never did well at the box office and inspired by a theme park ride that filmed was slammed before it was ever released.

Yet the film didn't crash and burn it became one of the most successful films of 2003 grossing almost $654 million worldwide.

The film gave birth to one of the biggest cinema icons of the last decade Captain Jack Sparrow as well as delivering two sequels, both of which appear in the top five biggest grossing movies of all time.

Tooth Fairy is released in cinemas on May 28th.
