In upcoming movie Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, McGregor plays fisheries expert Fred Jones. He is approached about a project which involves introducing the sport of fly fishing to the Middle Eastern country Yemen. But after positive persuasion from the Prime Minister’s Office Jones agrees to take part in the programme. Whilst in Yemen he falls in love with Harriet Chetwode- Talbot, played by Emily Blunt. But when the project is sabotaged will Jones give up on this impossible project?
Fred Jones is a stark contrast to other characters than Ewan McGregor has played throughout his career. Below are some of his most memorable parts to date.
Renton: Trainspotting
Not long after beginning his career as an actor, Ewan McGregor got the part of Renton, a young heroin addict, living in an economically depressed area of Edinburgh. He is part of a young group of football fanatics and fellow heroin addicts. He eventually becomes bored with this life and decides to quit the drugs. He enters a Drug Rehabilitation Programme, after being arrested, but eventually goes back to his old ways. McGregor’s character is then forced to go cold turkey by his parents after nearly dying of an overdose. He succumbs to many disturbing hallucinations whilst trying to kick his habit, but eventually overcomes his addiction. Renton ups and moves to London and starts to lead a normal life, but his past found a way of catching up with him and turned his new life upside down.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Star Wars Episode One, Two and Three
In the prequel trilogy of Star Wars, McGregor plays Obi-Wan Kenobi. In the first of the three movies, he is a young Jedi Padawan, who accompanies his master Qui-Gon Jinn on a negotiations mission. Here he meets young Anakin Skywalker, who displays to Obi-Wan talent. Just before his masters death Obi-Wan is promised the right to be able to train Anakin. In the second movie Obi-Wan has achieved the rank of Jedi Knight and is the master to Anakin Skywalker. In the final of this trilogy you see that Ewan’s character has progressed to an even higher rank of Jedi Master on the High Jedi Council, as well as a general in the Army of the Republic. The bond between Obi-Wan and Anakin has strengthened, but this does not last. Obi-Wan has to make the decision to fight his Jedi partner after finding out that he has succumbed to the dark side of Force.
Christian: Moulin Rouge
Here McGregor plays a depressed and struggling writer in the Montmartre district of Paris. He finds a partner and together they write a show, “Spectacular Spectacular.“ Christian is introduced to Satine about the show and he falls in love with her. The Duke, who Satine is promised to, becomes suspicious of the pairs growing relationship and threatens to stop funding the show. Christian is reunited with Satine after the Duke tries to attack her and urges her to run away with him, but she refuses. Despite a threat to his life Christian sneaks into Moulin Rouge to declare his love for Satine. Just before her death the pair confirm their love for one another, also giving Christian inspiration for another show.
Bob Wilton: The Men Who Star At Goats
In this hilarious comic war film McGregor plays the character of Bob Wilton. After his wife leaves him for his editor at the Daily Telegraph, he jets of to Iraq, to prove to himself and to the world that he can make it. On his travels he meets Lyn Cassidy, played by George Clooney. He is a retired Special Forces Operator, who was once involved in a programme that taught an American training unit parapsychological skills, such as invisibility, remote viewing and phasing. After discovering that his old school peer, Larry Cooper ( Kevin Spacey) has restarted the programme, Lynn decides he must stop the operation, with the help of Bob. When Wilton returns home he writes up his story, but finds that only the humorous part of the story has been printed and promises to himself that he will eventually get the bigger story out. The film ends with McGregor’s character running though a solid wall in his office.
