The likes of Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman have long since flown the flag for Australian acting talent - but now there is a new batch of talent that we should all be keeping a beady eye on.
And one of them is back in action this week as Emily Browning leads the cast in Julia Leigh's directorial debut Sleeping Beauty.
So to celebrate the release of the movie we take a look at some of the Aussie youngsters who are making a name for themselves on the big screen.
- Emily Browning
Like so many do Browning kicked her career off in TV with Thunderstone, Something In The Air and Blue Heelers before making the transition into movies.
And she has been an actress who has not been afraid to mix and match her roles moving from the likes of dramas such as Ned Kelly to horror movies Darkness Falls and The Uninvited.
Similarly 2011 has been a year of mixing and matching and she moved from blockbuster style Sucker Punch to Sleeping Beauty.
Sleeping Beauty is the most challenging and grown up role to date for Browning and it looks set to establish her as a major force.
- Chris Hemsworth
Home and Away was where Chris Hemsworth got his acting breakthrough - staying with the hit show for three years.
It wasn't long after leaving that he made the move into movies - landing the role of George Kirk in Star Trek; a small but quite pivotal role.
And while he has had other roles since then it was his performance as Thor in one of Marvel's summer blockbusters that has made him a household name.
Casting a lesser know star in a new franchise was a good move by director Kenneth Branagh and the actor excelled in the part.
He will be back next year as Thor in The Avengers, which sees him team up with Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner.
- Mia Wasikowska
Mia Wasikowska is one of the most talented stars to come out of Australian in recent years and she has a very promising career ahead of her.
She really grabbed everyone's attention last year when she was cast as Alice in Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland.
Since then she has starred in The Kids Are Alright and Jane Eyre, in which she was excellent alongside Michael Fassbender.
Restless and Albert Nobbs are two other projects that are due for release over the coming months and she is currently filming The Wettest County In The World.
- Kodi Smit-McPhee
Kodi Smit-McPhee's breakthrough role came in 2009 when he starred alongside Viggo Mortensen in The Road.
But it was late last year when he really showed his acting metal as he starred in Let Me In, an American remake of Let The Right One In.
It was a powerful performance from Smit-McPhee and his co-star Chloe Mortez as two outsiders who find one another.
He has already completed work on The Congress and he is set to play Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet.
- Ryan Kwanten
Ryan Kwanten was another actor who used HOme and Away as a platform to kick off his career before moving into American projects.
He has mixed and matched his TV role with movie projects with the likes of Red Hill and Don't Fade Away under his belt as well as L& Order: Special Victims Unit.
But he is best known for his role as Jason Stackhouse in True Blood - a role he has played since 2008.
But he has a series of movie projects in the pipeline with Knights of Badassdom and Not Suitable for Children already completed.
- Isabel Lucas
Home and Away was also where Isabel Lucas kicked off her career before moving into movies - where she has had some success.
She has starred in Daybreakers as well as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and turned her hand back to TV with The Pacific.
We will next see her on the big screen later this year with Immortals but she has also completed work on Red Dawn and Loft.
Sleeping Beauty is released 14th October.
