Tim Burton returns to the director's chair this week with his new movie Frankenweenie - his first stop motion animation project since The Corpse Bride.

And to celebrate we are going to take a look at some of Burton’s finest work over the years... starting with the charming Edward Scissorhands.

It was back in 1991 when Edward Scissorhands hit the big screen and it not only launched the movie career of Johnny Depp but it kicked off one of the great film collaborations between actor and director.

Burton has made his name with more of a gothic style with Batman and Beetlejuice but now he stepped into the fantasy genre as he re-told the tale of Beauty and the Beast.

The movie may be set in a slightly exaggerated vision of suburbia in America but the film did tackle issues that many could relate to from adolescent angst to fitting in.

The movie takes a good look at the ideals of society and how Edward struggles to find a place there because he is so 'different' to everybody else.

Edward Scissorhands is heart-warming and charming central character and Depp plays him with a real innocence and wonder - as well as with a lot of depth.

Despite the odd nature of the story and the character Depp has anchored the film in reality as he faces very real feelings and problems - and that is what makes him so relatable.

On top of all of that this movie is also visually stunning as Burton creates some beautiful and fascinating contrasts.

The castle nods back to Burton’s gothic roots while the town is vibrant and colourful and full of life and yet there is a sinister underside to this world.

Burton blends elements of gothic, fantasy, love, humour and silliness and all of these elements make Edward Scissor hands a vibrant and exciting picture.

Edward Scissorhands is a movie that has not diminished over time and while both Depp and Burton have gone on to enjoy huge success this movie remains some of their best work.

Frankenweenie is released 17th October
