Gary Oldman in Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy

The summer blockbuster season has only just finished but we are already talking about the Oscars - yes I know it gets earlier and earlier every year.

But the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals have got every one whispering about nominations and wins as there is a whole host of movies that performances that we should be getting super excited about!

So lets take a look at some of the men who are making an early bid for the most coveted prize in movies.

So who and what is causing all of this early fuss? Well first of all everyone is raving about Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - which is out tomorrow - a British spy movie with a great central performance from Gary Oldman.

There are already people talking about an Oscar win for the actor - a sentiment that was echoed by co-star Colin Firth on the red carpet earlier this week.

Another actor who has been grabbing all the headlines is Michael Fassbender as he won the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival for his central performance in Shame - could this be the year for a nomination?

I sincerely hope so as Fassbender is a great actor with a fine body of work this year; including Jane Eyre and the forthcoming A Dangerous Method.

The Oscars always love a biopic movie and Leonardo DiCaprio is set to play J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar.

DiCaprio has notched up a handful of nominations in recent years and 2012 could be the where he finally gets his hand on the prize. (Trust me biopic role a sure fire winner)

Johnny Depp could also be in contention for The Rum Diary and Ryan Gosling is gaining a lot of attention for his movie Drive - he is also set to star in Ides of March; which is directed by George Clooney.

And Clooney is also back in from of the camera in both Idea of March and The Descendants - in which he leaves the directing to Alexander Payne.

In supporting roles it seems that the competition is going to be just as tough but a couple of the early stand out favourites include Kenneth Branagh for My Week with Marilyn and Jim Broadbent for The Iron Lady.

But it also seems that Gerard Butler has left his awful romantic comedies behind for something a little more hard hitting with Coriolanus, which is Ralph Fiennes directorial debut, could he be a serious contender?

Over the summer there was more discussion as to whether actor who work with motion capture should be recognised by the Academy - I happen to believe that they do and Andy Serkis should bag a nod for his great performance in the Rise of the Planet of the Apes; he should have been nominated for Gollum if we are being really honest.

But films such as Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Ides of March all have great supporting cast including the likes of Colin Firth, George Clooney and Paul Giamatti.

I am getting excited for awards night already!!
