Donnie Darko centres around a troubled teenage boy Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal ) who struggles to fit in with society growing up in suburban America.
Donnie is plagued by visions of a large bunny rabbit named Frank who takes control of his mind and makes him commit a series of crimes and convincing Donnie the world is ending.
The film has to be seen as the most iconic films for 2001 due to its extraordinary look into the life of a troubled teen who is confused and mentally ill.
Shown at the Sundance Film Festival, Donnie Darko became one of the festival's most debated and discussed films, it soon gathered a cult following and was praised for blending sci-fi with the version of modern suburbia.
First time Director/Writer Richard Kelly shows that he has magnificent talent and skill for films and one of the reasons why the film is so iconic is that Richard hasn’t produced anything of the same standard since.
It does leave you wondering if he was just a one hit wonder, especially with his latest release The Box starring Cameron Diaz being slammed by the critics, however this shouldn’t take away the way he crafted this film.
It saw the break out of Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal who both put in a superb performance and have now gone on to make names for themselves in their own right landing big blockbuster roles.
The way the film tackles the issues of love, family relationships and the secrets of the universe shakes you to the core. Donnie Darko takes you on an adventure that you will never forget and leaves you asking yourself do you know who you really are?
