The Co-operative and Dogwoof bring to UK audiences the much anticipated documentary Dirty Oil, from Academy Award®-Winning Director Leslie Iwerks.
Dirty Oil illustrates the devastating impact that Albertan tar sands developments are having on the environment and local First Nation communities.
Filmmaker Leslie Iwerks (The Pixar Story, The Hand Behind The Mouse: The Ub Iwerks Story) in this beautifully photographed and moving documentary, goes deep behind-the-scenes into the strip-mined world of Northern Alberta, Canada.
Here, vast and toxic tar sands provide the US with the majority of its oil. Told through the eyes of scientists, “big oil” officials, politicians, doctors, environmentalists and First Nation communities directly affected by “the largest industrial project on the planet today”, the filmmakers journey to uncover the emotional and irreversible toll this “black gold rush” is taking on our planet.
Dirty Oil dramatically explores the battle between industry, government, local communities and environmentalists. From the heart of the tar sands in Northern Alberta and following the pipelines of the U.S.
Midwest oil refineries to witness the increasing attempts to dump toxic waste into the Canadian Great Lakes, this inspiring film explores new possibilities and actions for our planet and our future.
The film is narrated by Canadian actress and environmentalist Neve Campbell (Scream, Wild Things). Campbell commented “I am excited about working on the documentary “Dirty Oil.” It’s an important film and will be a catalyst for social and environmental change in the same way that Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth” was in 2006.”
With appearances in the film by world renowned authors, scientists, politicians and environmentalists, including Lester Brown (author of “Plan B”), Andrew Nikiforuk (author of “Tar Sands”) and Mel Knight (Alberta Minister of Energy), this is the heart wrenching story of industry and government putting money before the health and security of people and the environment.
Dirty Oil is the third film released in the UK by film distributor Dogwoof in collaboration with The Co-operative, following on from Anders Ostergaard’s Oscar Nominated Burma VJ, and George Langworthy and Maryam Henein’s Vanishing of the Bees.
Dirty Oil is released 19th March.
