Cast your mind back to the beginning of the year and FemaleFirst gave you a little heads up as to which stars to keep a close eye on throughout 2009 so it’s time to look back and see if the ones to watch made it.

To say that Slumdog Millionaire was a success would be a huge understatement as Dev Patel shot to stardom.

It's hard to believe that the actor began his acting career in Skins when back in February he walked down the red carpet at the Oscars, where the Slumdog took home the Best Picture gong as well as a string of others.

But for his performance a string of awards came his way including British Independent Film Awards, Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association, National Board of Review and Chicago Film Critics association for Best Breakthrough Performance.

He was also nominated at the Baftas and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Patel turns to the big screen next year in M. Night Shyamalan's new movie The Last Airbender, a live action adaptation of animated TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Despite kicking off his career in 2004 this summer saw Chris Pine's star rise a notch or two as he took on the role of James T. Kirk in the rebooted Star Trek.

Director J.J. Abrams took the popular franchise right back to the beginning and followed the Enterprise and it's young crew on their maiden voyage.

The film kicked off the summer of blockbusters, and was the best of them by a country mile, and was well met by the critics.

The partnership of Pine and Zachary Qunito, who takes on the role of Spock, is perfect; Pine has that self confidence and cockiness to take gambles and risks paired with the logical Spock, who at first seems the more competent ruler, the calmer presence on the deck.

The pair are quite literally at each others necks from the word go as they both fight for command of the Enterprise. But when faced with danger and death they realise that the only way they are going to survive is if they pull together and that most famous friendship begins to develop.

And off the back of this really good movie, and you don't need to be a Trekie to enjoy this one, he has a very busy schedule over the next few months.

Carrier was next out for the young actor and Small Town Saturday Night and Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey are currently in post production.

He is currently filming Unstoppable and the ball has already begun rolling on a Star Trek sequel.

After the success with Star Trek and with J.J. Abrams staying with the franchise this a series of movies that has serious legs.

2009 has been a very successful, as well as a very busy, year for Rebecca Hall as she juggled work on the big screen as well as on TV.

Her year kicked off with Frost/Nixon and was quickly followed by Vicky Cristina Barcelona, both of which featured heavily during the award season.

For her performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona the British actress picked up a Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Golden Globe nomination.

She teamed up with David Tennant and Andy Serkis for Einstein and Eddington, which followed the story of Einstein's theory of general relativity.

Staying with TV she moved onto the critically acclaimed Red Riding, an adaptation of English author David Peace's Red Riding Quartet.

The series is set to a backdrop of murders and police corruption and also starred the likes of Sean Bean, Paddy Considine and David Morrissey.

Her last big screen appearance came earlier this year in Dorian Gray, adaptation of Oscar Wilde's 1891 novel.

On the horizon for the actress is movie is Please Give and she is currently filming The Town.

After a successful 2008 Gemma Arterton was another actress we had our eye on when 2009 kicked off and her success looks set to continue into the new year.

She has mixed and matched her roles this year with Richard Curtis' return to the director's chair The Boat That Rocked.

She returned to the big screen last week with St. Trinian's II: The Legend of Fritton's Gold as Kelly Jones.

But the big budget blockbusters beckon for the actress as she stars in one of the early must see movies of the year Clash of the Titans.

Starring alongside Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson the movie follows the mortal son of the god Zeus embarks on a perilous journey to stop the underworld and its minions from spreading their evil to Earth as well as the heavens.

And it's the blockbusters all the way this summer as Prince of Persia: Sands of Time hits the big screen which sees Arterton team up with Jake Gyllenhaal.

Other stars who have had a good year include Kat Dennings, Michael Cera as well as Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson building on their 2008 success.
