2011 saw Colin Firth cement himself as a true cinema great as he got his hands on a Best Actor Oscar for a superb performance in The King’s Speech.
Yes Colin Firth is FemaleFirst’s actor of the year after not only winning the Oscar but backing that up with another super performance in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
The year was kicked off by a string of superb movies and none was greater than The King’s Speech - a performance that came twelve months after A Single Man; which gave Firth his first Oscar nomination.
The King’s Speech saw Firth team up with director Tom Hooper as well as Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush.
While the movie is set to a backdrop of a monarch in crisis, a death and an abdication, rocking the royal family this film remains a very personal journey for the central character of Bertie.
And to say that Firth is wonderful in the central role is a bit of an understatement as he struggles to overcome the stammer, which the actor performs flawlessly, that has plagued him his whole life.
It is a very heart-warming story about friendship, family and a man struggling with his own insecurities and flaws - be believes that he cannot be the king that everyone expects and needs him to be.
Firth picked up a Best Actor Oscar while Hooper won Best Director as well as Best Film earlier this year.
And one excellent movie was not enough for Firth in 2011 as he joined a stellar British cast in the adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
Directed by Tomas Alfredson the movie saw Firth joined on the cast list by Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Mark strong, John Hurt and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Tinker Tailor Solider Spy is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best political thrillers that I have had the privilege to watch - it hooks you from the word and it really a very absorbing watch.
This is a very different for Firth as he is sly and underhand throughout the whole of the movie - it really is a great performance from the actor.
And the remake of Gambit is the big movie that we will be seeing Firth sat in in 2012 as he joins forces with Cameron Diaz.
Directed by Michael Hoffman the film sees Firth take on the role of Harry Deane while Alan Rickman and Stanley Tucci are also on the cast list.
