Castaway
Washed up and left to fend for himself on a deserted South Pacific island, Tom Hanks' portrayal of a man battling his own loneliness in Castaway has triumphed over tales of alien invasion and apocalyptic asteroid strikes to be named the Best Survivor Film of all time by film fans.
To mark the release of ice-cold ski slope thriller Frozen, LOVEFiLM asked over 2,000 film fans to vote for the top films that truly pushed characters to the limit.
The 2000 Robert Zemeckis film, for which Tom Hanks won an Academy Award, took 16 per cent and first place in the poll - proving that one man's intense struggle to stay alive resonated with film fans more than global destruction and apocalypse.
Smashing into next place is 1998's Armageddon, which follows the lives of a crack team of oil miners tasked with averting global destruction from a wayward asteroid. Bruce Willis' brave team averts certain disaster, but with an explosive ending that propelled this film into second place (14 per cent).
Snapping up third place (13 per cent) in the poll is 1975's Jaws. This marine thriller, which caused thousands of cinemagoers to avoid the beach for a number of years, tells a tale of survival against one of nature's fiercest predators.
Taking an icy turn with 12 per cent of votes is Touching The Void, a true-life story that pitched its characters against another of nature's killers - the dreaded mountain climb. Sub-zero temperatures, deadly ravines and blizzards set the mercury plunging but managed to send the 2003 film racing up the list to fourth place.
The title of the fifth place film, Alive, gives just a hint of what the actors' motivations were for this production. It chronicled the struggles of a Uruguayan rugby team involved in a near-fatal plane crash in the Andes. Faced with a grueling trek in arctic conditions, the team battled through to fifth place in the list with ten per cent of votes.
Roland Emmerich's epic 2004 release The Day After Tomorrow fits neatly into the frozen theme of LOVEFiLM's poll, with Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal faced with the less-than-cosy consequences of a cataclysmic drop in the earth's temperature. The blockbuster gained eight per cent of votes, sealing its fate at sixth place in the list.
Mel Gibson's 1979 dystopian Mad Max charts at seventh place (six per cent) in the list while another classic tale of survival in eighth place is 1963's Lord of the Flies - following the plight of a group of school children left to fend for themselves on a remote island.
The second release from Roland 'partial to a global catastrophe' Emmerich is 2012 which hurtled into ninth place in the poll (three per cent) and crashing into tenth place from outer space is 2005's War of the Worlds - the most recent adaptation of Orson Welles' classic with just two per cent of the votes.
