The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Let’s face it it is not very often that the big budget blockbuster gets the Academy recognition that it deservers - despite having huge success at the box office.

Every once in a while a blockbuster movie comes along that seems to win the Academy over - Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King being the two that spring to mind - but it is not very often.

The critical acclaim and box office success was not enough to see The Dark Knight pick up a Best Picture nod or Avatar to walk way with that major prize - losing out to The Hurt Locker.

Of course we expect some of the year’s biggest movies to be nominated in the special effects categories but is there a film that can be a Best Picture nod - and there are a few movies that could be in contention.

The Dark Knight Rises was one of the most anticipated movies of the year as Christopher Nolan brought his time as the Batman director to a close.

The movie came four years after the success of The Dark Knight and brought the trilogy to an epic conclusion as it was the biggest and most daring film in the series to date.

The overlook of the Dark Knight for Best Picture was nothing short of a travesty four years ago as it was a movie that was worthy of winning the award not just bagging a nomination.

But now that there are a possible ten films that can be nominated for Best Picture it certainly increases the chances of The Dark Knight Rises and other blockbusters to take their place amongst the more Oscar tradition films.

The Dark Knight Rises could well be nominated as a form of compensation for being overlooked last time around but it is not as good a movie. Will the Academy nominate a movie that is not as good as the film it failed to recognise?

Skyfall is the biggest Bond movie of all time and is widely being regarded as the best film in a franchise that has spanned fifty years.

The movie has not only enjoyed major critical and box office success but there are now calls for the movie to pick up a Best Picture nomination.

In the fifty years of Bond the franchise has picked up two of the minor Oscars but it has never been nominated for the big one.

Skyfall is in with a major shout of a Best Picture nod and it really would be a huge shame to see it overlooked as it is one of the best movies to grace the big screen this year.

If there is one movie that everyone is getting excited about this year then it is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as Peter Jackson takes us back to Middle Earth.

The last time that Jackson adapted a Tolkien novel he walked away with a whole host of gongs including Best Picture and Best Director

There is a still a lot that is not known about The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as it is doesn’t hit the big screen for another couple of weeks - however it does look like it is going to be a hell of a ride.

I strongly expect the Academy to come out in full support of this movie if it is everything that fans hope that it will be.

Avengers Assemble and The Hunger Games have been two of the other blockbusters that have been thrilling fans and setting the box office alight this year but they will most likely miss out.

Avengers Assemble may be the biggest grossing movie of the year and it could get the nod for some of the technical awards but I think a Best Picture nod is out of its reach.

As for The Hunger Games perhaps a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination it not impossible but it does seem unlikely that it would be bound for the Best Picture category.

The Oscar nominations are announced 10th January
