The Bodyguard

The Bodyguard

So throughout the late seventies, eighties and nineties the movie soundtrack was a necessity to any film worth it's salt, sadly this appears to be a tradition that has died off.

Most commercial movies had a signature song such as My Heart Will Go On from Titanic and (Everything I Do) I Do It For You from Robin Hood followed by albums that were, in some cases, just as big as the movie.

But it seems that the film industry has turned it's back on all of this reverting to the classical film score. But FemaleFirst isn't ready to forget as we take a look back over some of the biggest selling soundtracks of all time.

The Bodyguard

Let's face it The Bodyguard was practically a Whitney Houston album but that hasn't stopped it from becoming one of the biggest selling movie soundtracks of all time.

With a whopping forty two million copies sold worldwide it's one of the biggest albums of all time never mind just one of the biggest sound tracks of all time.

And of course it's I Will Always Love that everyone remembers from the movie as Houston reworks Linda Ronstadt's 1975 version. She was originally going to record What Becomes of the Broken Hearted until it was discovered that the song had been used in Fried Green Tomatoes.

I will Always Love You was a suggestion from Kevin Costner and he turned out be right as the song spent fourteen weeks at the top of the Billboard Hit 100.

Dirty Dancing

It's fair to say that most girls have a copy of this album somewhere, I have it on both CD and vinyl, and it too has sold 42 million copies worldwide.

1987 saw Dirty Dancing fever sweep the nation as Baby and Johnny danced together for the very first time and it has remained a movie that every girl seems to fall in love with.

Like the movie the soundtrack was a huge hit spending 18 weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart.

(I've Had) The Time of My Life scooped the Academy Award of Best Original Song and a second album More Dirty Dancing, yes I have that too, was released.

Saturday Night Fever

While An Office and a Gentleman is quite often credited with the birth of the big movie soundtrack Saturday Night Fever were already in it back in 1977.

But when you have got music legends the Bee Gees working on the music you can't really go far wrong, I have this record too.

And with 30 million copies under it's belt it's fair to say that this soundtrack has done very well for itself, not to mention the shit load of money that the Bee Gees made from it.

John Travolta began a trend of blokes donning the white suit and taking to the dance floor on a Saturday, hands up who did it and, at the time, Saturday Night Fever went on to become the biggest selling soundtrack of all time.

Titanic

You can't really talk about soundtracks without giving Titanic a teeny weeny mention, it's hard to believe that my Heart Will Go On only spent two weeks at number one in the UK, god it felt like much longer.

But the song was number one all over the world and has become one of the biggest selling singles of all time.

Enya was originally going to come on board to compose the music but after she declined James Horner was brought on board.

My Heart Will Go On won Best Original Song at the Oscars in 1998 as well as the Golden Globe and the album sold thirty million copies worldwide.

Purple Rain

Prince not only produced a great soundtrack but Purple Rain is widely regarded as one of the best rock albums of all time.

And with sales of 20 million worldwide, yes I have a copy, the pint-sized singer must have done something right.

Released back in 1984 it was Prince's sixth album and spent twenty-four consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200. The Academy Award-winning film grossed more than $80 million in the US alone, and has proved to be Prince's biggest cinematic success to date.

Prince had huge success with Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry and Purple Rain, winning an Oscar for the latter.

Grease

Finally we could really miss out Grease which was released just a year after Saturday Night Fever but a couple of years before the soundtrack boom.

Released in 1978 the Grease soundtrack has sold twenty eight million copies worldwide. You're The One That I Want was the biggest selling single from the record.

It stayed at the top of the UK chart for nine weeks and remains one of the biggest selling singles of all time in the UK.

Other big selling soundtracks include The Lion King, Forrest Gump, Footloose and of course Top Gun.
