Avatar made box office history when it broke through the $1 billion barrier in just seventeen days.
James Cameron's sci-fi epic joined an elite group of just four other movies that had also achieved the same feat.
But now twelve years after Titanic became the biggest grossing movie of all time it has finally been toppled by Avatar.
1. Avatar (2009) $1,846,179,737
The movie follows a paraplegic marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.
The movie has dominated the global box office since it's release and looks like it's going to set new standards by possibly breaking the $2 billion barrier.
The movie found itself amongst the nominees for the Golden Globes and went on to win the Best Picture Drama gong. As well as picking up nominations at the Screen Actors Guild awards it's almost certain of picking up Oscar nods when they are announced next week.
2. Titanic (1997) $1,835,300,000
It's hard to believe that Titanic was released thirteen years ago and has dominated the top of the biggest grossing movies of all time chart for over a decade.
The movie follows the blossoming romance of Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater on the ill-fated maiden voyage of the Titanic.
As well as dominating the box office when it was released it was the toast of Hollywood at the Oscars when it walked away with eleven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Cameron now holds the top two spots on this chart.
3. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) $1,129,219,252
The release of the Lord of the Rings movies became a big Christmas event over the three years that they were released, with The Return of the King being the most successful.
It became only the second movie to break through the $1 billion barrier and was, for a time the second biggest grossing movie of all time.
Like Titanic the movie went on to dominate the Oscars as it equalled the eleven gong win as Peter Jackson finally picked up Best Picture and Best Director, having been overlooked the previous two years.
4. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) $1,060,332,628
It's fair to say that the pirate movie had been box office poison before Pirates of the Caribbean came along and the first movie wasn't expected to be much of a hit.
But Disney re-ignited this genre of film and introduced us to one of the biggest cinematic icons, in the form of Captain Jack Sparrow.
So a sequel seemed inevitable and when it was released fans flocked to the cinema and Dead Man's Chest was the biggest grossing movie of the trilogy.
5. The Dark Knight (2008) $1,001,921,825
The Dark Knight has be crowned the best comic book movie of all time setting a standard that may never be equalled let alone bettered.
Batman, Gordon and Harvey Dent are forced to deal with the chaos unleashed by an anarchist mastermind known only as the Joker, as it drives each of them to their limits.
The release of the movie was made all the more poignant after the unexpected death of Heath Ledger, he went on to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar last year for his performance.
6. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) $968,657,891
The Harry Potter novels had set the world alight and captured the imagination of millions of children.
A series of movies to accompany the books seemed inevitable and the first one hit the big screen in 2001.
Rescued from the outrageous neglect of his aunt and uncle, a young boy with a great destiny proves his worth while attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Fans flocked to see these literary characters come to the big screen and this remains the biggest grossing movie in the series.
7. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) $958,404,152
At World's End brought the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy to an end, but there are now plans for a fourth film; that doesn't come as much of a surprise.
Captain Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann must sail off the edge of the map to save Jack, navigate treachery and betrayal, and make their final alliances for one last decisive battle.
Chow Yun Fat and Keith Richards joined the cast while Geoffrey Rush made a welcome return as Barbossa and the movie was unlucky not to break $1 billion
8. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) $937,000,866
9. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) $933,956,980
The Harry Potter franchise has become the biggest grossing series of movies of all time, and with the final book being split into two movies it looks set to cement that record.
10. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) $922,379,000
It was the day that Star Wars fans had all waited for as George Lucas returned to the movies that had made his name.
The movie takes place before the birth of Luke Skywalker, featuring the friendship between the young Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, who would later become Darth Vader.
