2012 has been a fantastic year for movies and there has been a mix of great blockbusters animation, comedies and dramas.

So we have taken a look at the top ten biggest grossing movies of the year - and there have been some huge film success this year.

1. Avengers Assemble - $1.5 billion

Avengers Assemble is the biggest grossing movie of 2012 and was the first film of the year to break the $1 billion barrier.

Joss Whedon returned to the director’s chair and brought together a great cast list that included Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson.

He brought together a whole host of larger than life characters and storylines and balanced them all perfectly as well as providing some awesome action sequences.

Avengers Assemble stormed to $1.5 billion at the global box office to not only become the biggest movie of the year but the third biggest film of all time behind Avatar and Titanic.

2. The Dark Knight Rises - $1.08 billion

It has been a long four year wait to see Batman back on the big screen but this summer The Dar Knight Rises brought the Christopher Nolan franchise to a triumphant close.

The movie is set eight years after events of The Dark Knight as sees Bruce Wayne as a totally broken man. He goes on his biggest personal journey as he is called into action once again when Bane takes over Gotham city.

Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway were some of the new faces on the cast list while Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine all reprised their roles.

Nolan brought the franchise to an epic close as the movie and stormed the box office where ever it was released.

The Dark Knight Rises is the most financially successful film in the Batman series - just piping The Dark Knight which also broke the $1 billion barrier.

3. Skyfall - $952 million

Bond is one of the greatest movie franchises of all time and to celebrate its fiftieth year the best movie in the series hit the big screen.

After the disappointment that was Quantum of Solace director Sam Mendes got the franchise back on track wit Skyfall while Daniel Craig delivered a knockout performance as 007.

The movie nodded back to the past as well as staying very contemporary - not to mention it was an action packed ride.

Judi Dench was back as M while Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, Javier Bardem and Naomi Harris are all new faces on the cast list.

Skyfall stormed to the top of the U.S. and UK box office and has gone on to be the biggest grossing movie at the UK box office of all time.

4. Ice Age: Continental Drift - $874 million

Back in 2000 Ice Age hit the big screen for the very first time and it enjoyed moderate success - no one every thought it would go on to become one of the biggest animation franchises of all time.

But that is exactly what has happened as Continental Drift is the fourth movie in the franchise as we are one again on an adventure with Diego, Manny and Sid.

The film once again thrilled audiences of all generations and Continental Drift is the biggest grossing animation movie of 2012.

5. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 - $778 million

The Twilight Saga is one of the biggest film series of all time to hit the big screen and this autumn we saw the story come to an end.

The movie has made stars out of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart and the pair was back as Edward and Bella and facing their toughest test yet - the protection of their young daughter.

Bill Condon was back in the director’s chair as he brought this love story to a close. And while the movie has been a huge success at the box office the film went out with a whimper rather than a bang.

However it is the biggest grossing movie in the franchise and topped the box office in both the U.S. and the UK.

6. The Amazing Spider Man - $753 million

The original Spider Man trilogy enjoyed huge box office success at the beginning of the noughties and made Tobey Maguire a star.

But we have not seen the Spider Man on the big screen since 2007 - that was until he made a return this summer as the franchise was give a reboot.

Andrew Garfield took over the role of Peter Parker in what was the biggest movie of his career while Marc Webb was in the director’s chair for the film.

The Amazing Spider Man took the story right back to the beginning and was a huge hit when it was released this summer. Filming is set to get underway in early 2013 for the sequel - which will see both director and actor return.

7. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted - $742 million

Madagascar is another animation franchise that has performed above and beyond what was expected over the years.

This year saw the third instalment hit the big screen and followed Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria as they struggled to get home to New York.

With just three movies the Madagascar franchise has grossed in excess of $1.8 billion at the global box office and is the eighteenth biggest grossing film series of all time.

8. The Hunger Games - $686 million

The Hunger Games is one of the most popular series of books and this summer saw the first instalment adapted for the big screen.

The Suzanne Collins novels have gained quite a following in recent years and there were excitement surrounding this movie the minute it was announced.

Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence was cast in the central role of Katniss Everdeen while Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks are all on the cast list.

The Hunger Games is one of the biggest blockbusters of the year as it was a financial success as well as a critical success. Filming is underway on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire while the final instalment will be split into two movies.

9. Men In Black 3 - $624 million

It has been ten years since Men In Black 2 graced the big screen and it was 1997 when the characters of
Agent J and Agent K were introduced to movie go-ers for the first time.

But this summer Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones reunited for Men In Black III - which also saw director Barry Sonnenfeld to the franchise.

The movie follows Agent J as he travels back in time to M.I.B.'s early days in 1969 to stop an alien from assassinating his friend Agent K and changing history.

Josh Brolin and Emma Thompson were just a couple of the new faces on the cast list and the film went on to be the most successful in the franchise.

10. Brave - $535 million

No summer is complete without a Pixar movie gracing this big screen and after two years of sequels the animation giant was back with an original story.

The movie really brought the Highlands of Scotland to life whilst telling a very real story that audiences could relate to.

The film may have been surrounded in enchantment and magic but at it heart is a story of a warring mother and daughter that do not see eye to eye.

Brave is the best animation movie to hit the big screen this year and it is up there with the best of the Pixar movies.
