The musical is always a fantastic big screen event and this week sees the genre return in the form of Les Miserables.

The movie has critics raving and it has already taken the global box office by storm - not to mention it has picked up Best Film nod at the Baftas, Golden Globes and the Oscars.

So to celebrate the release of the movie we take a look at some of the best musicals of the last decade.

Chicago (2002)

Chicago is one of the biggest musicals to hit the big screen in the last decade as director Rob Marshall brought the popular stage show to the big screen.

Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta Jones took on the roles of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly while Richard Gere was also on the cast list.

Murderesses Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart find themselves on death row together and fight for the fame that will keep them from the gallows in 1920s Chicago.

The movie was a critical and commercial hit and it went on to win the Best Picture Oscar - seeing off competition from Gangs of New York, The Hours, The Pianist and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Phantom of the Opera (2004)

Phantom of the Opera is one of the greatest stage musicals of all time and in 2004 director Joel Schumacher brought it back to the big screen.

The movie cast then the rather unknown actor Gerard Butler in the lead role of the phantom while Emmy Rossum played Christine.

Patrick Wilson, Miranda Richardson and Minnie Drive made up the cast list while Andrew Lloyd Webber co-wrote and produced the film.

While the movie split the critics it did ok at the box office when it was released.

Hairspray (2007)

Hairspray was a comedy movie that hit the big screen at the end of the eighties before being tuned into a stage musical. And it was the musical that was made into a movie in 2007.

The cast list had a mix of well established talent and young upcoming stars as John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Nikki Blonsky and Zac Efron starred.

Pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad teaches 1962 Baltimore a thing or two about integration after landing a spot on a local TV dance show.

The movie was a breath of fresh air that year and it went on to be a big box office success.

Adam Shankman returned to the director's chair last year with Rock of Ages but he failed to have the success that he enjoyed with Hairspray.

Dreamgirls (2007)

Dreamgirls was one of the most talked about movie of 2006 as Bill Condon was in the director's chair and Beyonce Knowles and Jamie Foxx were on the cast list.

But it was Jennifer Hudson who grabbed all the headlines as he delivered a stunning performance in her big screen debut - which resulted in a Best Supporting Actress Oscar win.

Based on the Broadway musical, a trio of black female soul singers cross over to the pop charts in the early 1960s.

The movie was packed with towering vocal performances from the cast and won over critics and audiences.

Mamma Mia! (2008)

Mamma Mia was one of the biggest movies to hit the big screen in 2008 as the hit musical was adapted into a film.

The film saw Phyllida Lloyd in the director's chair and brought together a great ensemble cast including Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Amanda Seyfried.

Mamma Mia follows a bride to be who is trying to find out who her real dad it.

Mamma Mia hit a chord with audiences and went on to become the biggest grossing musical of all time at the global box office as it took in excess of $609 million.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2008)

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton working together on a music is quite possibly something you thought that you would never hear... that was until they collaboration on Sweeney Todd.

It was an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical and saw Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter show off their singing skills.

Sweeney Todd was in Burton's typical gothic fashion and we unlike anything else to hit the big screen that year.

As for Depp he went on to bag a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his central role.
