Audrey Tautou returns to the big screen this week with her new movie Beautiful Lies, which is directed by Pierre Salvadori
It's the first outing for the Bafta nominated actress since the release of Coco Before Channel last year as she leads a cast that includes Nathalie Baye and Sami Bouajila.
- Can you tell us a little bit about the story and your character?
I really liked the story and the mechanics of the situation, how a lie can bring my character into such terrible situations.
I like how she starts to lose control over everything. She’s somebody who thinks that she’s right, that she’s authoratitive. She pretends to be very confident, but in fact it’s all just hot air. That’s very charming, it’s so funny and enjoyable to play a character who is unbearable.
- What was it like to work with Pierre Salvadori again after Priceless?
I love him very much, and we both enjoy working together a lot, we had such a great experience on Priceless. I really like his work, his writing and his way of directing actors.
I’m just doing my job as an actress, but by writing the movie and by directing it, Pierre knows exactly what he wants. The fact that this was the second time we worked together, made it a very comfortable experience, I really trusted him and I felt reassured about what I could do. It’s really a question of confidence, it was marvellous.
- What is the relationship like between Emilie and Maddy?
There relationship is very complex, it’s typical of many relationships between a daughter and a mother which often have complexities.
It’s always a special bond. I really liked the fact that Pierre decided to show not a perfect, completely effective mother/daughter relationship, where there would be only love and sweet, rose-tinted emotions.
Life is not like that, for me this is far more realistic, there’s a mixture of good and bad intentions, which makes the story between them more colourful and true.
- Can you tell us about working with Nathalie Baye?
She’s a wonderful actress, I really admire the little sparkle of craziness she brought to her character. I liked her audacity. She’s a free spirit, an independent woman who can be funny and moving. Nathalie made Maddy a very rich and complex character, she’s beautiful.
- And what was it like working with your co-star, male lead Sami Bouajila?
Sami is an amazing actor, I think he’s one of our best French actors because he’s capable of playing both drama and comedy.
He’s so right, clever and funny. He’s a fantastic listener, how he survives the craziness of Emilie is very funny, it was marvellous to work with him.
- What was it like on location, where you filmed in Sète?
Pierre wanted to have nice light, when you are surrounded by water in a charming town like Sète it has a wonderful, natural light, sunny and bright.
He didn’t want to set it somewhere too bourgeois, he wanted somewhere friendly and joyful. I think the location fits well with the story because it’s light and effervescent like champagne bubbles, uplifting.
Beautiful Lies is released 12th August.
