We may have a had a whole host of movies that have been led by big named stars - Alice In Wonderland, Harry Potter and Iron man 2 being just a couple of examples but there have been a hole host of actors who have broken through in the last twelve months.
Every year we get a string of movies that prove to be the breakthrough performances for a handful of stars - 2010 has been no different.
So we take a look at some of the actors that have been making an impact.
Jennifer Lawrence
The twenty year old actress grabbed everyone’s attention when she starred as Ree Dolly in Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone.
Her central performance in the adaptation of the Daniel Woodrell novel was met with rave reviews by the critics and the award nominations have flooded in.
She has already won Gotham Independent Film award for Best Breakthrough as well as the National Board Award.
She has picked up nominations at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild. Lawrence has already completed work on The Beaver with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster and has been cast as Mystique in X-Men: First Class.
Aaron Johnson
Brit star Aaron Johnson may have hit the big screen with a bang at the end of 2009 with his performance as John Lennon in Nowhere Boy but he was back on the big screen earlier this year.
He led the cast of Matthew Vaughn’s Kick Ass, one of the must see comic book adaptations of the year. The movie was based on Mark Millar’s graphic novel and was a huge critical success - as well as doing reasonably well at the box office.
He is currently back on the big screen with his new movie Chatroom, which is directed by The Ring filmmaker Hideo Nakata.
He is currently filming Albert Nobbs, which will see him star alongside Glenn Close, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Mia Wasikowska.
Mia Wasikowska
The relatively unknown Mia Wasikowska was got her big breakthrough movie this year when she was cast in the role of Alice in Alice In Wonderland.
The movie, which was directed by Tim Burton, saw her work alongside Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter and it was one of the first big event movies of 2010.
The movie was a critical and commercial success as it went on to gross in excess of $1 billion at the global box office.
She changed pace in the summer when she teamed up with Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo for The Kids Are All Right, a movie which had he critics raving.
And next year looks set to be even more successful for the young actress as she will star in Jane Eyre as the title character.
Logan Lerman
2010 also brought a new teen pin up as Logan Lerman took on the role of Percy Jackson in Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief when it was released back in February.
At the tender age of just eighteen Lerman became a pin-up around the world as the movie enjoyed major success at the box office.
And he will be back next year in the iconic role of D’Artagnan in a re-make of The Three Musketeers, which also stars Christoph Waltz, Orlando Bloom, Mads Mikkelsen and Matthew Macfadyen.
He is also set to star in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Greta Gerwig
Greta Gerwig also enjoyed her biggest role to date this year when she teamed up with Ben Stiller to star in Greenberg.
For her performance she was nominated for Best Breakthrough Actress at the Gotham Awards and has gone on to work on No Strings Attached and Arthur.
