12 Years A Slave has triumphed at the 2014 Baftas, as is scooped the Best Film award and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor.
The Steve McQueen movie was the favourite to win the Best Film prize, but it did face some tonight competition from Gravity: which scooped six gongs. But the biopic was not to be denied and now has its sights set on the Best Picture Oscar.
Ejiofor has been in the awards mix for the last few weeks, but on home soil he triumphed – much to the delight of the audience in the Royal Opera House.
It was a great night for Gravity as it scooped six gongs; including Best British Film and Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron. It won’t come as a surprise that Gravity was a big winner when it came to the technical awards.
Cate Blanchett was the red hot favourite for the Best Actress Bafta, and she did triumph once again for her performance in Blue Jasmine: seeing off tough competition from Amy Adams, Judi Dench, Sandra Bullock and Emma Thompson.
Jennifer Lawrence took away the Best Supporting Actress, while Barkhad Abdi was the surprise winner of the Best Supporting Actor gong for his role in Captain Phillips.
Will Poulter was another popular winner as he scooped the EE Rising Star award- the only category voted for by the public. Poulter has starred in the likes of Son of Rambow and Kill Bill, but enjoyed success in 2013 with We’re The Millers.
