Most drivers could save around 25% on their fuel bill by improving their driving skills and carrying out simple Do-it-Yourself maintenance jobs. Small improvements would also reduce vehicle pollution and improve road safety

Simple things such as checking tyre pressures every two weeks will save 8% if your tyres are under-inflated, or try smooth and consistent driving that will save 10% in urban areas while good gear changing will pocket you as much as 20%.

Unload your vehicle and remove a roof rack when not required, will save 30% and if you turn off the air conditioning and the heated rear window when they're not needed adds another 10% at the pumps. Avoid excessive idling of your engine as it adds to pollution so will help both pocket and planet- it is often more economical to switch off the engine.
