The increased size of modern cars is being partly blamed for the 66,000 motorists who will collide with another vehicle when trying to negotiate a parking space this year.

The new figures, released by leading prestige accident management firm, Accident Exchange, highlight the number of motorists who now struggle to judge the dimensions of their cars from behind the wheel.

With repair bills averaging £1,350, it means innocent motorists are suffering more than £90m worth of damage in Britain’s car parks every year.

You see its not just the fact women cannot park - that is an old fallacy men tired to use to brain wash us. The cars are getting bigger leading to tens of thousands of motorists being on the wrong end of someone else’s misjudged parking or manoeuvring.

The average parking bay is 2.4m by 4.8 m so if you drive a Mercedes R- Class you are stuffed, as it is nearly 2.2m wide and 5.2m long.

But it’s not just the Mercedes. Take a Ford Focus, Britain’s best selling car today. It measures just over 1.8m wide and 4.3m long compared to its predecessor, the Escort that was 16 cm shorter and 23cm slimmer.

They also point to the increasing width of structural A-pillars, which reduce visibility, and improvements in front end design for pedestrian safety.

I also blame the idiotic antics of some of these drivers who steam out of their parking bay expecting other cars to simply stop for them. NO! The idea is you SLOWLY drive out, that gives you time to look out for other cars and STOP if one is there.

It’s not exactly rocket science.
