The safety of children on our roads is one of the greatest concerns for parents, according to a report out today.
The Cambridge University report, Community Soundings will feed into the biggest independent review of primary education for 40 years.
The report confirms the huge concerns parents have about child road safety. 71 children were killed on foot last year on UK roads and many parents live in fear that their child will be knocked down by a vehicle every time they leave the house.
The problem we have today, is that children are being ferried to school inevitably by car therfore are not being taught road safety nor to become Street Wise.
I look back to when I used to go to school that was over three and half miles away as my parents insisted on a Catholic school and the journey involved two buses. But if I felt like it I walked and was allowed to pocket the bus fare. Through this I learnt about road safety.

So it is no wonder todays parents are concerned but really, most of them have only themselves to blame by wrapping up the chidlren in cotton wool. Therefore, why not teach them road safety by walking them to school especailly as the local school should be under two miles or using the school bus if there is one. It gives children a sense of freedom as well as learning the valuable life saving lesson of road safety.
