New research in a poll of 2,500 motorists by Vauxhall reveals that 47 % do not understand the most common road signs.

Vauxhall are now calling for an update of the style and design of today’s road signs to reflect the needs of modern motoring.

Currently, over a third of motorists struggle to read road signs as they pass them and over 65 % of people think that current signs need updating to be easier to read.

This has led to a studious 15 % of motorists often re-reading the Highway Code to brush up on their signs.

The five most misunderstood road signs are ‘no through road’ with 70% turning back once they realised what it meant, 33% recognised thankfully, the sign warning them of ‘two-way traffic’ crossing a one-way road. Less than two thirds knew what a ‘no cycling’ sign looked like while another third risk getting stuck because they didn’t have a clue when it came to the sign warning of ‘height restriction’. Even more sadder was only two thirds of drivers recognised the ‘no motor vehicles’ sign.

Road signs have not fundamentally changed in 70 years but I am sorry, they are still pretty obvious what they mean from the picture aren’t they?

This is why I firmly believe to forget retesting drivers every five or ten years, simply give them a theory test every five years so they remember what these signs mean and hopefully avoid any more unnecessary accidents.

No motor vehicles - I ask you
