Advice To Motorists On Weathering The Strom

Motorists are being advised to avoid unnecessary journeys and take extra care on the roads as heavy rain and strong winds causes havoc across Britain.

With strong winds of up to 70mph being expected in some parts of the UK, motorists are being advised to take extra care on the roads and check local weather forecasts before heading out and adapt driving techniques if out on the roads as sudden high winds, heavy rain and flooding make driving conditions difficult and dangerous, particularly for drivers of high-sided vehicles

Strong winds have already caused road traffic accidents and power cuts across the UK. In Scotland, heavy snowfall has left many motorists stranded. So I have a few tips for you

If wet, allow double braking distances and slow down. If bad visibility, turn on dipped lights and possibly fog lights if really bad. Again slow down and take more brakes as the concentration needed to drive safely in these conditions increases.

Before you set off, check your windows and lights are clean, your oil, water and washer levels are correct, tyre pressures are what they should be and wiper blades in good working order.

Charge up the phone with your emergency contacts in and have a few chocolate snacks, coat and blanket in the car, just in case of breakdown. Otherwise do what tortoise’s do - hibernate
