When it comes to taking care of their cars, women are more like Carly Wicks, Eastenders resident female mechanic, than millionaire heiress Paris Hilton, reveals research from the Post Office®.
The research explores the myth that women are not savvy when it comes to their cars. Without fear of getting their hands dirty, more and more women will dive under the bonnet to solve a problem.
Over half (57 per cent) women car owners check their cars oil themselves, and four in ten (44 per cent) fill up their own anti-freeze during the cold weather.
Female car owners have no hesitation rolling up their sleeves as one in five (21 per cent) say that they would change a flat tyre themselves if they were far from home. The remainder chose to call in the experts.
Female drivers also ticked the boxes for preparation, with half (50 per cent) ensuring that they personally check the air pressure on their tyres before setting off, while another thirty six per cent would get someone else to check it. This not only improves fuel efficiency, but is also cleaner on the environment.
Post Office®s head of insurance Phil Ashkuri said: Carrying out these small maintenance tasks will not only help maintain your car but hopefully prevent you from breaking down when driving alone. Although some female drivers still prefer to call in the experts, this research highlights that women are becoming more conscious of the car, their safety, and the effects a well-maintained car has on the environment.
But even with good maintenance, cars can and do break down so we advise all of our customers - male and female - to ensure they have adequate breakdown cover. The Post Office® offers additional breakdown cover with every policy it sells to safeguard drivers from those unexpected faults they cannot fix themselves.
