While some scrupulous motorway service stations are charging up to 6p a litre above the national average for fuel, supermarkets have continued the fuel war by cutting pump prices for the second time in a week. The latest move follows price cuts of around 3p-4p a litre in both petrol and diesel last week.
Asda has led the way with a 2p a litre cut in the price of a litre of unleaded petrol and a 4p a litre reduction in the price of a litre of diesel. The move prompted both Tesco and Morrisonâs to follow suit. Asda has also challenged its rivals to stop pricing locally and to adopt a national strategy.
In contrast the major oil companies have been accused of âprofiteeringâ by failing to pass on to motorists a 12% drop in the wholesale price of fuel. Announcing profits of millions is really not what we motorists want to hear right now unless of course, it is passed down to us.
Sadly not.
The fall in wholesale fuel prices meant there was scope for oil companies to cut unleaded petrol by 6p a litre and diesel by 7p a litre - but they were failing to do so, claimed the motoring organisation.
I say we should all boycott the giant money guzzling stations and support our local supermarkets.
