Over Five Million Empty Car Seats On The School Run

Research conducted by Honda (UK) has found that nearly half of all parents who drive their children to school take only one child in their car. As a result there are over five million empty seats on Britain’s school run every day.

Honda’s survey also reveals that if half of parents on the school run agreed to take just one additional child in their car, over 500,000 cars would be removed from UK roads at peak times rising to 942,5906 if MPV’s were used properly as people carriers and had bums on seats. Goodness me, that will certainly ease congestion during term time.

Half the respondents said they would like to lift share in future, recognising the environmental, financial and congestion benefits of doing so while, 60 % of parents said they knew of another child within 500 metres of their home that attended the same school as their own child.

So why don’t they put their money where their mouth is and opt to share? But no, 47% of parents who take their children to school only have one child in the car, which is not going to dent a hole in the 2,356,364 cars on the school run every day.

So come on parents, start a lift-sharing scheme at your school and relish in the extra time you will have on your hands enjoying a cup of coffee at home, in peace whilst counting the pennies saved in petrol.
