Thousands of motorists are fighting back against the spread of speed cameras according to a new survey by beatyourban.co.uk that says 78% of drivers believe speed cameras are failing to make the roads safer.
"Our survey shows that motorists have had enough of feeling persecuted. We're all fed up with the relentless march of the speed cameras which are punishing 100,000s of us for breaking the speed limit by just a few miles" says beatyourban's founder Gary Wells.
More than a million British drivers are now on the brink of losing their licence because of the increase in speed cameras. Five million more now have six penalty points on their driving licences. 6,000 cameras are located nationwide and there are plans to double this number in the next 3 years.
The beatyourban.co.uk survey shows that 62 % of drivers interviewed want to see speed cameras replaced with other measures to improve road safety.
Even greater numbers think more traffic police would result in safer driving. 83 % say there should be many more police officers visible on Britain's roads. They believe road safety has declined as fewer officers police our roads.
Well I could not agree more.
Speed cameras have their very valid place in keeping the fatalities down, but a clear strong presence from the police is far more a deterrent for cyclist jumping red traffic lights, drivers tailgating and of course blatantly speeding motorists. The whole department could be self-funded from the money they make on spot fines. Job done!
