A whopping 8.6 billion miles will be travelled on the UK’s roads this festive season and many of them in unsafe vehicles, according to new research released today.

The poll of 1,000 motorists, conducted by Auto Windscreens, one of the UK’s leading automotive glazing services companies, found that 87 per cent of drivers plan to make at least two journeys at Christmas with 11 per cent of those traveling over 250 miles in a single return journey.

Despite this, 77% of motorists surveyed do not check their car for necessary repairs before a long trip and 82% simply never check under their bonnet, as they are too scared of finding a costly problem.

The survey also found that 25% of UK drivers are ignoring the need to replace worn tyres while 47% admit to failing to get windscreen chips repaired. More worryingly is the 26% of drivers who would rather wait for a windscreen chip to develop into a crack before thinking about getting it repaired.

However it is one of the cheapest to be made safe and legal. If a driver is fully comprehensively insured then usually there is no charge for a windscreen chip repair. Getting a chip repaired sooner rather than later will also help avoid a costly windscreen replacement when a chip becomes a crack.

So crackdown on the expensive presents and spend the money saved wisely on keeping your car safe and roadworthy this festive season.
