Soon, thousands of cars could become worthless as road tax hikes attack drivers pockets, with the hardest hit being families who need bigger vehicles. In 2007, the Labour government announced that any car registered between March 2001 and March 2006 could soon be faced with a huge increase in road tax based on CO2 emissions by up to a massive £245 a year.Cars that emit more than 225g/km of CO2 will be hit the hardest, punishing those who drive family cars such as the Renault Espace and Citroen C4 Picasso. Not only will drivers see their tax payment increase, but also they will see the value of their vehicle plummet dramatically.UK motorists are being forced into an impossible situation, they cannot afford to fill up at the pumps because of ever-increasing fuel prices, they cannot afford a new car because of the credit-crunch and they cannot sell their old car because road tax increases render it worthless. While the outlook does look bleak for many, garages and used car sales companies have seen a huge increase in sales of cars registered before 2001. This is because any vehicle registered before March 2001 is exempt from huge tax levies on its emissions, only seeing a maximum rise of £15.
This has to be madness personified. Who came up with the magical date of March 2001? Best keep my 1989 Renault Scenic as it could be worth its weight in gold next year.
