Hannah Hill, Money for Life volunteer and Halifax branch manager has created some top tips on saving money this Valentine's Day. Make the day special and save some cash at the same time!
1. Bring the celebration home – most supermarkets have dine-in-for-two deals, which are great value for money and save you forking out at expensive restaurants. Be sure to shop around before buying your private gourmet dinner!
2. Flowers from your supermarket are not only cheaper than flowers from your local florist, but also last longer, meaning you get more for your money.
3. Start the day off by spoiling your loved one with breakfast in bed; not only can you buy food cheaply from your local supermarket but it’s also a very romantic gesture.
4. You don’t need to buy expensive presents to show your partner you care; get creative and make a card, create a painting, make them a personalised playlist of their favourite music or write a love letter that they’ll treasure forever.
5. Romantic gestures don’t have to cost the earth. Stick post-it notes around the house telling your partner why you love them.
6. Surprise your loved one at lunch with a spontaneous picnic. Check out the reduced items at your supermarket and pick up a reasonably-priced bottle of bubbly to add a bit of luxury to the occasion.
7. Check out what’s happening in your local community for evening entertainment. You’ll be amazed at what cool events are happening at affordable prices just around the corner from you.
8. If you’re not celebrating Valentine’s Day this year, offer to babysit for couples who have children or cook for them to earn some extra cash.
9. Many special offers are not available on Valentine’s night itself, so if you do fancy treating yourselves to a romantic meal out you could create a home-made voucher to present on the night, promising a future night out in order to take advantage of the best deals. (This also means you can avoid sitting in rows with all the other Valentines couples!)
10. Be a tourist in your own city – there’s not always a need to go away to celebrate Valentine’s Day; check out the free museums, art galleries and entertainment that your city has to offer.
