Recently I met up with Angie Best, former wife to footballer George Best and mother to the exceptionally handsome Callum Best to talk to her about her attitude to ageing. She turns 66 next month but looks more like a woman in her 40’s!
She devotes a lot of her time these days to her health and fitness business and I met her at her own gym called ‘Metaphysical’ in Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire.
I was intrigued to know what her secret was to her youthful looks and she revealed,
“I don’t use any particular products as I don’t believe that creams are going to give you a good skin, it all comes from the inside and your skin is your biggest organ. The inside creates the outside-that old adage you are what you eat…it’s the absolute truth.”
Angie admits to loving a beauty sample or two but when it comes to diet she is clearly strict!
I asked her about sugary treats, which let’s face it are most people’s weakness!
“I love ice-cream, I love cakes…there are some days I am so busy I have to stop to buy sweets and I love those pastilles! It’s all about now and again. When I say cakes and ice cream, maybe once every 2 or 3 months.”
Her discipline about diet and skincare is something that has clearly inspired her son Callum despite his dad’s well publicised history with alcoholism.
“My son Callum really looks after his skin and it shows mind you his dad, George Best was an extremely handsome man. Sadly, you can see in pictures of his dad when the alcohol was taking over because his looks just went…like gone! It’s the saddest thing to see when someone is so beautiful and so strong and they abuse it like that.”
I think when you go through something like that it must make you more aware of looking after and preserving yourself as Angie is clearly extremely disciplined.
Angie freely admits to having a facelift in her mid 40’s in Hollywood, despite the fact she didn’t need it but it was free! She doesn’t do fillers at all and is very happy with her looks!
“I don’t mind the wrinkles….as long as it’s a healthy face looking back at you”
Recently she has discovered arthritis in one of her shoulders but she is not letting this slow her down either, she now wants to make a documentary on the subject! Her determination to remain active is a real inspiration.
“I will never get complacent about life and ageing!”
