We are slowly but surely exiting the long winter months, but unfortunately the weather has not received the memo. I’m not sure the weather will ever make up its mind from sun to snow in the space of a week. However, do not fear I have the perfect coats that are necessary for every wardrobe especially the ones dealing with British weather. From jackets to coats and even capes here are the five essentials you need.
Keeping it neutral
Everyone should have a selection of items from the neutral palette be it tops, socks, bags, or trousers but especially coats. It is the easiest way to take an outfit from drab to chic in an instant. There is an ever growing popularity of coats in this shade as it is seen from the catwalk to the high street. My personal favourite is a double breasted coat in any shade from the neutrals as it can be popped on the shoulders and matched with sunglasses for that refined and elegant look. Small additions such as a matching belt which is tied around the waist adds dimension and accentuates your figure. Another option is an embellished sleeve proving that even the most basic colours do not have to be boring.
Superhero cape
Capes and cloaks had a huge presence on the runways, with designers like Oscar de la Renta and Prada styling the outerwear with everything from skinny jeans to leather pants and minis. Now this may not seem like an essential to some however it is an effortless way to look put together. With material draping the arms, back and chest it is a statement look for any occasion and adds an air of mystery. A cape is a perfect alternative to a standard wool coat, as they range from different lengths it is a must for any wardrobe. Team this extravagant look with great boots and your best gold jewellery to ensure all eyes are on you.
Drop it to the floor
The maxi trend seems to be making a comeback and is perfect for these colder winter months and transitioning into the spring. So it is only right you add this timeless piece to your wardrobe as you can never go wrong with a floor sweeping maxi coat, it is the very beacon of elegance and grace. You can be certain that any entrance will be made dramatic whilst you're wearing this. It is ideal for pairing with long dresses for a super sophisticated look or with leather leggings and roll neck top for a more demure and chic look. I would opt for a black or neutral shade, however for those of you who like a bold look go for reds or greens.
Extra padding
If you want to feel like you’re still wrapped up warm in your duvet out of the house then a puffer jacket is the ideal coat for you. This style of jacket has skyrocketed in the fashion world and can be seen on most influencers and celebrities. It is a fun and edgy look whilst also feeling like an instant hug and in these times who doesn’t want that! Get yourself wrapped up in this style as it is not going anywhere, there are many versions out there most popular are the maxi puffer coat and the cropped puffer jacket both are extremely comforting and work well as a transitional garment from winter to spring. They are at their peak when styled with active wear or lounge wear for an effortless, put together look which is just right for those weekly trips to ASDA.
In the trenches
Who could be without the classic trench coat? This is the ultimate staple for your wardrobe, no one should be without. It can be worn all year round if necessary as it fits with any look and because of its lightweight feel it is extremely versatile for any weather conditions meaning its cool enough for spring and can be layered up for the winter. This is one coat that is worth the investment and definitely should not be scrimped on. The practicality of this coat combined with the power to turn any outfit into an effortless look makes it one of the most reliable. Thrown over jeans and a t-shirt for a casual look or paired with a high end dress for an elegant look there is no end as to what this coat can do.
