Yves Saint Laurent, a film about the designer and his personal live, has been released in UK this week and to mark the occasion we’ve picked out our five favourite fashion films.
Now, these are not necessarily about the fashion industry as a whole, but have certainly inspired our style every time we’ve watched them.
Devil Wears Prada
First up we have the Devil Wears Prada, an incredibly quick witted film that was adapted from Lauren Weisberger’s book rumoured to be about her stint as Anna Wintour’s personal assistant at Vogue.
Andy is an aspiring journalist working as an assistant for the insufferable Miranda Priestley, played by Meryl Streep. Andy goes from a woman who doesn’t take her appearance to seriously, to someone who wears the ‘Chanel boots’ for a day in the office.
With plenty of feisty characters and an incredible designer wardrobe this film is a must-see for any fan of fashion.
A Single Man
Tom Ford took his first foray into directing with this film, so of course it was always going to be a stylish affair. Pair that with his close friend and muse Julianne Moore and you’ve got a stylish recipe at hand. Colin Firth plays George, a man on the verge of suicide, who is exquisitely tailored, then there’s Nicholas Hoult who favours mohair sweaters, and everything other person who graces the screen, it’s certainly a stylish affair.
Sex and the City
Following on from the incredibly stylish TV series, we catch up with Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda four years on, only to discover they’re more trendy than ever before. Of course we can’t forget the wedding dress either, the one that was ‘made for her’ by Vivienne Westwood.
The Great Gatsby
Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby had Miuccia Prada creating the costumes so it was always going to be a decadent affair. And last year when the film was released there was plenty twenties fashion hitting the high street, proving the influence of film costumes of fashion.
Clueless
Of course Clueless had to make the list of the top 5 fashionable films; a true classic about a rich, spoilt teenager, Cher, who has her entire wardrobe filed on a computer to make it easier to pick out an outfit.
Very little happens in the film, we know this, but it’s still a must-see for any style conscious girl. And of course, you’re going to find out what lengths a girl will go to for her Alaia dress.
