Luella SSO9

January is finally upon us and with it brings a whole new influx of fashion to the high-street and most importantly, a whole new host of trends to work in time for spring and summer.

This year will see florals take centre stage once again, as designers featured them heavily on the SS09 catwalks and celebs, such as Anna Friel has already been papped wearing a printed maxi dress.

X Factor winner Alexandra Burke has also been spotted in two floral motif dresses from high-street fave Motel, proving that her fashion credentials are as good as her singing.

In terms of what we saw on the runway, Luella in particular created a gorgeous spring line full of colour and vitality. Her SS09 florals had a very 50s feel about them, clashed with hair netting and stripy trousers.

Basso and Brooke's floral flush had an amazing Oriental twist to them, which saw models go down the catwalk in kimono style tops and lavish hair accessories.

Alexander McQueen and Burberry Prorsum, however mixed their floral prints with some sheer fabrics, which will be another big hit for the year ahead.

The high-street will replicate all these styles for sure, and we'll be seeing vintage take on futuristic florals, making everywhere awash with colour.

The key to working the new spring florals is to look for bright and colourful prints and clash them with stripes, checks and neon. These new spring florals are not refined or restrained, they are fun, funky and modern.

Look to the likes of Agyness Deyn or Jaime Winstone for colour inspiration, as they are unafraid to mix patterns and prints to create a new style.

Also don't be afraid to mix florals together, as pansy and ditzy prints can work very well together, as can mixing different floral colours together too.

Here's some of the early spring florals just hitting the shelves...
