With the words recession and credit crunch looming heavily on your mind this festive season, we thought we'd give you some quick tips on how to update your look this Christmas- without breaking the bank.
Some things are worth investing in this year, but others are much better reworked and restyled to give you a completely fresh new look.
We buy a staggering amount of clothing that never gets worn, so instead of buying a whole outfit for your Christmas party or an office do, hunt around in your wardrobe and find some hidden gems.
Something which may have been in fashion a few seasons ago, will more than likely make a re-appearance this year or early next year, so it's worth holding on to classic pieces such as the Little Black Dress and some smart tailored pieces.
In terms of updating a black dress, this is one of the easiest things to master, as black goes with everything and never goes out of style, so here's out top five tips on updating you LBD this festive season...
1. Customise
Lace and sequins are huge news this winter, so why not head to your local haberdashery and pick up some gems? If you're not very creative, then get a group of your girl mates together so you can all experiment with customising your new look.
2. Shop Ahead
Look at what is going to be in fashion next season and buy accordingly. For example, sequins are still going to be around in the summer, so if you buy a sequined shrug, jumper, cardigan or leggings to update your look this season, you'll be able to wear it in a new way next year too.
3. Tights
One of the cheapest and easiest ways to update your dress is to invest in a pair of funky tights. Coloured tights are popular every season, so it's worth getting a pair that will last, however our favourite colours of the season have to be hot orange, tomato red and deep blue. When worn with a simple black dress, they will update your look instantly.
4. Layer
Layering is a common way to make an old dress seem new, and this is also true of party dresses. Buy a long coloured top to wear underneath a strapless or sleeveless black dress to give it a colourful and fresh edge, or buy a lace shirt and wear underneath, to give the appearance of an on-trend lace dress.
5. Belt Up
Thin belts are being forecasted as being big news early next season, but we think the classic waist-clincher belts are always worth investing in too. Nautical styles will be popular for next season, so if you see some of them on your shopping trip then bag them quick!
