Jay Manuel by Mike Ruiz

Jay Manuel has revealed that he loves Topshop and London style. The Stylist to the stars and America's Next Top Model Judge is a bag fan of the british brand and always makes sure he shops there, whenever he is in the UK.

He only flew in yesterday and has already bagged some Vivienne Westwood designs, A guy after our own girlish hearts.

He's known in America for fronting Style Her Famous and covering Red Carpet fashion, but the really great thing about Jay is that he loves turning women's lives around through fashion and that's why he's such a hit.

The fact that he's mates with Tyra Banks and Jennifer Lopez only make us love him more. We chat to Jay about his love for Topshop, why he thinks Kim Cattrall looks great for her age and all about his celebrity pals.

Hi Jay, How are you?

I'm good thanks.

What have you been up to recently?

Well, I flew to London yesterday to promote the style network. It's actually one of my favourite cities, I come her a lot and I've already hit the shops, pretty much as soon as I got off the plane, so how about that!

How do you like London- is it quite fashion forward do you think?

Oh deffo, I was just saying I feel that especially the men here they take a little more pride in thier appearance, whereas Amercian's they always want to throw on khakis and shirts and be more causal and you. Just walking the street last night to go to dinner, you just see men, you know, playing with their look and I think they have a little more fun and are more fashionable. I mean me personally I've been to Vivienne Westwood already to buy some asymetric type stuff and i love that, I think fashion should be fun.

Have you been to Topshop yet?

Not this trip, but I have been before. I went to Topshop when I was 12-years-old and I was on vacation with my family and I got all sorts of cool stuff, so everytime I come to London I go. It's such a great resource and the styles there are great, you know and you don't have to break the bank. You can get some trendy pieces which are in and it's a great resource for people to buy the latest looks

What do you think about eco-fashion, are you involved with anything eco at the minute?

Actually, I'm not involved with anything like that, but in New York City Fashion Week there was certianly lots of different designers that used eco-friendly fabrics and such. Unfortunately I was working, you know with Style Her Famous, so I've not been able to attend anthing like that. I think it's very innovative and a lot of eco-friendly fabrics are really cutting edge. So typically people mention that area and people think it will be natural and boring, but actually it's quite the opposite.

How did you get involved with Style Her Famous?

I'd been working for E Network so I've been doing that for a few years, you know on the red carpet, but the Head of Creative Development came with this idea to do a make-over type show and i was like it's been done, and I wanted to do something different and inspiring and actually as a totally different twist, we came up with a colloborative effort and that was Style her Famous. Everybody has a favourite celeb that they love their style so the concept is that it's not a copy cat make-over. You know we ask who is their favourite celeb, take an element of their key style and adapt that to the person we're working on and help them turn over a new leaf and help them take a new direction. We give them the VIP treatment and give them the hair and make-up products to carry on their transformation.

Which celebrities have you worked with?

Well, everyone knows I've worked with Tyra Banks, she's the biggy. She's great I've worked with her for a long time, since 1997 so we're not only colleagues but close friends. It's great that she tapes her talk show in New York because we get to see each other a lot more outside of work. I've worked with some many different people, such as David Bowie, Irman, Kim Cattrall, Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lopez.

Who has the best celeb style in your opinion? I mean have you ever thought of someone and thought, Wow she's got great style, or gone, urg! she needs a makeover now?

I think today esepcailly, you know I wish, where is Cher!? Where is the Cher's of this world, when people turn up wearing something crazy, and you think why?! I love cher, she was genius. I feel like there are all these stars today who have more stylists, so it's tricky to tell who has amazing style and who just has a great stylist. But Certainly Jennifer is great, Katie Holmes has become a fashion icon now and I love Angelina Jolie. You know, and Charlize Theron, she was obviously a model before she's was an actress, but her style is unique. And oh god, somebody who I'd love to work with is Cate Blanchett. Her style is her own, she knows what works well on her and she dictates how she wants to look. How she even hit some of those Red Carpets last season, pregnant, but still pulling out all this innovative style, it was really exciting.

We like Cate, she's pale and interesting- there are so many people that go overboard on the fake tan, what do you think?

Well everyone here, especially in Hollywood they love fake tan a bit much. For some reason people think I'm tanned, but it's just my colour!

You mentioned working with Kim Cattrall, what do you think of her style and Sex and The City of course?!

I've only just seen the movie! I think for someone, first of all she's an amazing woman and has had such a great career and she's such a fascinating person to even talk to and she loves fashion. She's done the whole buying everything and for her role as Samantha in Sex and The City she just pulled off this amazing, sleek look. She is elegant and it's admirable that older women can look to her and say wow, I can be that. I've personally said before that I think a woman really becomes beautiful when she hits 30. That's when you really come into your own and I just think there is something beautiful about someone who is older.

How can you judge it then when you're on America's Next Top Model then?

When you're looking for a top model, you have to have it all. I was talking to someone before and you know Twiggy put it best when she said she's only a print she never didi runway and nor would they ever expect her too. That wasn't what models were expected to do back then. But now they have to do everything, print, runway, do commercials, stand in front of the media and that's really what we're looking for. Someone who is well-rounded and can handle that because, you know the competition is kind of the fast-track way into the industry and you have to be ready for that.

Style Her Famous Tuesday’s at 10.30pm, The Style Network, Sky Channel 276
