We forecasted Harlequin as a Trend Alert back in September and now with all the shops starting to stock some delightful circus goodies, we thought it was high time we showed you how to work the harlequin look.
Now your key inspiration for this trend should be the character of Harlequin, from the traditional Italian Commedia dell'Arte theatre genre. He was mostly known for his brightly coloured costumes and mischievous personality.
Diamond patterns, brightly-coloured designs and prints are now what has been adapted from this classic look, as it's given a modern twist for the 21st century.
We show you how to work the harlequin into your everyday wardrobe...
Dressing For Success
Dress, £85, Topshop; Opaque Tights, £5, Dorothy Perkins; Tux Jacket, £20, New Look
We're loving this circus inspired offering from Topshop, which will be oh-so delectable for Christmas parties, but will also work well teamed with black opaques, boots and a blazer jacket for a trendy work outfit.
The key to making this dress not too outlandish, is to keep accessories minimal and the same with your hair and make-up. If you are going on a night out however, feel free to take the colour to the max with a brightly coloured bag or jewel coloured eyes- we're especially loving bright pink at the moment!
Making a Statement
Tights, £2.02, Wonderland Party; Black Dress, £12, Peacocks; Studded Gladiatorial Shoes, £15, Peacocks
We appreciate these may seem a little scary at first glance, but if you keep the rest of your outfit minimal, then we promise these can work for you. We've teamed them with this simple, but stylish woollen dress and gladiatorial heels from Peacocks, to give the outfit some kick.
Monochrome is oh-so stylish now, and by making your tights the key feature of your outfit, you're bound to be a big hit around the office or when you're heading for a night on the town.
Circus Inspired
Top, £25, Miss Selfridge; Hat, £20, Asos; Purple Jeans, £30 Dorothy Perkins
The circus trend is working alongside harlequin this season and this bow offering from Miss Selfridge is prefect to incorporate that. We've chosen to work the clash into this outfit by adding some funky purple jeans and a trendy bowler hat for added edge.
Wrap Up
Scarf, £12, Asos; Brown bomber jacket, £50, New Look; Black jeans, £12, Boohoo
This is undoubtedly the easiest way to incorporate harlequin into your life. With the winter months well and truly closing in on us, a scarf is practically a must-have item this season! Team this cute scarf with a brown leather bomber and black skinny jeans for that girl-about-town look.
