Can fur really be eco-friendly?

Can fur really be eco-friendly?

Eco-Friendly Fur. Does that phrase seem right to you? To many people, that's like leaving the tap running for an hour and saying that it won't waste water.

But Japanese designer Chie Imai managed to present just that on Tuesday by showing her 2008-2009 Royal Chie Collection of fur designs.

The designer and her daughter, Chiaki presented the collection to the likes of Ivanka Trump and her brother, Donald and also Spike Lee and Tonya Lee Lewis.

Imai's collection works on the principle of combining the highest grade of chinchilla fur from Finland with a recycled fabric, made from used polyester.

The polyester comes from a Japanese Chemical company called Teijin Limited, who have been experimenting with recycled polyester for their sporting line, but this collaboration marks the first time the fabric has been used to create such a luxurious product.

Imai said: "I had heard about this advanced technology, and I wanted to see it for myself. Then I saw that it was something that was very interesting and new."

The forward thinking designer wanted to create a luxurious product that was both 'green' and innovative. The end product itself is pretty different to similar things on the market, as the fabric is both waterproof and breathable.

Imai also bucked the trend for showing a dark collection on the catwalk, instead opting for bold jewel tones like teal, crimson and mustard, mixed in with funky and new fur trims and embellishments.

So there you have it, fur that is actually eco-friendly, or is it? Can you really wear fur and be eco-conscious at the same time? Tell us what you think...
