Fashion for Dummies

Welcome to part three of Female First's guide to who's who in the fashion world.

There are so many fashion labels hitting the catwalk these days that it's hard to keep track of who's who so Female First have come up with some simple conversation key notes to make sure you know what you're talking about in even the fashionable of crowds.

Fendi- is run by five sisters; Paola, Anna, Franca, Carla and Alda after they inherite dthe company from their parents. Fendi is most famous for it's luxurious leather goods- particularly it's hanbags which feature the label's famous 'doube F' logo.. However the house also produces a highly successful womenswear range which is currently designe by Karl Lagerfeld.

Gareth Pugh- is a young British designer who has been very successful over the last few years. He is known for is elaborate, unworldly creations made using various materials including PCV, leather and inflatable plastic. Pugh likes to work in basic conditions claiming to have produced his 2005 collection while squatting in a converted warehouse from which he was later evicted by poilce.

Gianfranco Ferre- was known as the 'arictect of fashion' due to his love of structure tailoring and the fact that he studied architecture before he got into fashion.He spent years as the creative head at Christian Dior before starting his own label in 1974. Sadly Ferre died in June 2007 at the age of 62 after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

Gianni Versace- is one of the biggest names in the history of fashion and founded the infamous Versace fashion house. He was known for his love of theatre and costumes which inspired the clothes he designed. Versace was tragically shot dead on July 15, 1997, aged 50, on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion as he returned from his customary morning walk on Ocean Drive. His murderer was Andrew Cunanan, a spree killer who used the same gun to commit suicide on a boat shortly afterwards.

Giles Deacon- is a hot young British designer who is very popular with trendy young celebrities. He started out working for Botega Venetta before founding his own label. Gile's ex-girlfriend and former classmate is style icon and editor of Pop magazine Katie Grand so he knows all the right people. He also designed a collection, Gold, for New Look and persuaded Drew Barrymore to star in the ad campaigns after a chance meeting in a lift.

Giorgio Armani- is the most famous designer to come out of Italy and first founded the Armani fashion house in 1974. He is known for his great tailoring and smart suits which are worn by some of Hollywoods biggets names. Armani was among the first designers to ban models with a body mass index (BMI) under 18, after model Ana Carolina Reston starved herself to death due to anorexia nervosa.

Givenchy- is a fashion house founded by Hubert de Givenchy who was one of the first masters of haute couture in the 1950s. Givenchy was also one of the first designers to dress Hollywood stars with Audrey Hepburn amoung his biggest fans. He retired in 1995 and left John Galliano to succeeded him as head designer. Galliano was later replaced by Alexander McQueen. These days it's Riccardo Tisci who takes creative control of the label with his gothic inspired creations.

Gucci- was first founded as a saddlery shop in 1906 by Guccio Gucci but is now known as an international fashion brand. After decades of financial difficulties towards the end of last century Tom Ford took over as creative director in 1994 and made the label on of the most chic luxury names around. Alessandra Fachinetti was is now Creative Director for the women’s line, John Ray for the men’s line, and Alfreda Giannini for the accessories line.
