Charity shops are a good place to start the hunt!

Why is it so popular? Well, you can create a new look without spending money for a start and in these recession busting times, we're all for getting our fashion kicks without bankruptcy.

Customising is becoming big news in the fashion world, as whipping up new outfits with the aid of a sewing machine and a couple of new buttons can reinvent your tired looking clothes in a flash.

The key is knowing what to reinvent and what to chuck, so FemaleFirst are here to help with our comprehensive guide on what's hot and not for the summer ahead.

Firstly, denim is the big story for this summer and this really will be everywhere. So scour your wardrobe, local charity shop and root around your mum's old clothes for some denim goodies.

Denim dresses, shirts and jackets are set to be more popular than jeans, although if you can find a pair of skinny jeans that look past their best, simply bleach them to recreate the ones seen on Balmain's catwalk this year.

If you're handy with a pair of scissors, then you can also make your old jeans into a skirt and decorate with either some sequins, buttons or cloth patches to create a boho effect.

Fringing too will prove hugely popular this year, and the good news is that it won't take much for you create the look on your old clothes. Fringing will look great on skirts or added to a standard black bag to replicate Kate Moss' tassel bag she's been seen sporting recently.

Don't be afraid to take inspiration from the stars either, as most of them love to customise stuff themselves anyway! Just look at Lily Allen's Coco Chanel T-shirt that she was spotted in a few weeks ago, it really looked like she had drawn on it herself.

If it was a Lily original or from the new Chanel line, we'll never know, but in the meantime, why not have a go at creating the look yourself. All you need is a standard white T-shirt and a black marker pen and away you go!
